What’s different about this retreat?
Hi! I’m Amber Karnes. I have led over a dozen wellness retreats over the years, and I design my retreats specifically with plus-size travelers in mind. While I welcome folks of all shapes and sizes to join us, I center larger bodies in my work. The tiniest details are important to me so you can have an excellent experience.
I’m hiring a plus-size surfing instructor to teach our surf lesson. We’ll have rash guards in all sizes and extra-sturdy, wide surfboards that fit your body, to ensure your best chance of success in the waves.
At my retreats, I create a supportive environment where no one gets left behind, so you can safely push your limits in a group of other fun, positive folks without worrying about keeping up or fitting in.
Expect experiences where you can try something challenging (like surfing, doing a headstand, or exploring body image) in an environment specifically created to support you through the process of feeling awkward or “bad” at it.
We’re gonna celebrate each other when we feel awkward and when we win. And we’ll have so much fun learning and practicing together. My face always hurts from laughing and smiling so much at these events. 😂
If you have any concerns about whether you’ll be able to do the activities, or have questions about accessibility, mobility limitations, etc., please reach out! I’d love to speak with you.
Profound force in my life
Body Positive Yoga, particularly the retreats (I attended two), was a truly profound force in my life for several years. Amber crafted incredible gatherings, with great logistics of course but she also has an ability to set a tone and create a space that I know was meaningful for all involved.
These events were over 5 years ago and I still communicate with friends I made there.

☀️ Schedule
During this retreat, we’ll be living life at a different pace than most of us are used to. I encourage you to embrace the laid back, flexible rhythm of this Mexican surf town, where we plan our day around sunset and go with the flow.
Every day will look a little bit different and final schedules will go out a month prior to departure. This is not a retreat where every last second is packed full of activities or curriculum. There is spaciousness for you to explore on your own, have plenty of downtime, take care of your introverted side, and just relax. Expect some variation of this every day:
Breakfast
Start your day with a nourishing breakfast spread in the breezy, open-air dining area, along with fresh juices and coffee or tea. The food at the hotel is excellent, fresh Mexican fare and there are plenty of vegetarian options.
Morning Sessions
After breakfast, we’ll usually head to the yoga studio. Throughout the week, I’ll host yoga and meditation classes, skill-building workshops to prepare us for surfing, restorative yoga nidra meditations, and more.
Feeling nervous about the waves? One day, we’ll go to the beach without surfboards and learn techniques to be comfortable in the waves so you can keep a calm mindset during our surf lesson.
The surf lesson will also take place in the morning. We’ll pick the best day and time to ensure good waves and a fun learning environment.
Afternoons
Afternoons are yours to relax at the beach, lay next to the stunning hotel pool, take a nap in your room, have lunch at a local spot, get a (super affordable) massage, and explore Sayulita or beyond!
I encourage you to embrace the Mexican tradition of siesta in the later part of the afternoon (the hottest part of the day). Resting in the afternoon will keep you from getting sunburned or dehydrated, and reset your energy for a beautiful sunset, dinner, and the rest of your night.
Sunset
Sayulita’s whole rhythm revolves around sunset. Many businesses close in the late afternoon for siesta and to prepare for the sunset shift, and most of the town makes their way down to the beach at sunset to see those stunning west coast skies.
Meet your new friends for dinner at a beachfront restaurant for unforgettable views and vibes, or sit in the sand and feel the peace wash over you as you watch the sunset and hear the sound of the waves.
Evenings
After sunset, we’ll gather for a share circle before we head off to recharge in our rooms or to explore the town’s fun, vibrant nightlife. One night we’ll do a jungle hike to a secret beach, and on our final night I’ll host a silent disco dance party (not to be missed).
🌊
This Surfing Retreat Is Perfect For Beginners
Dry Land Workshop
Before we ever get in the water, we’ll spend time in the yoga studio working on skill-building like breathwork for a calm mindset. We’ll also take time to work on your pop-up (standing up on the board). If you have trouble stepping your feet forward between your hands, you won’t want to miss this workshop.
Pre-Surfing Water Workshop
If you’re nervous about the waves, don’t worry! We’ll go to the beach without surfboards and learn techniques to be comfortable in the (cute, small) waves. If you feel unsure about your skills in the ocean, this is a great chance to learn to manage in the water. And if you are already comfortable swimming at the beach, come hang out anyway!
Surfing Lesson with Professional Instructors
I’m a beginner at surfing, too, so I’m hiring friendly, easygoing surf instructors to teach us. We’ll be in the water learning at the same time, cheering one another on as we learn new skills and catch our first waves. I’m hiring one surf instructor for every 3-4 students to ensure you get the most chances at catching waves.
Special Equipment to Fit You
We’ll have extra-sturdy, wide, long surfboards and rash guards in all sizes. Our instructor will select a board sized appropriately for your body to ensure your best chance of success in the waves.
This retreat is the most low-stakes, fun way to learn surfing. If you’ve ever wanted to surf but were too nervous or intimidated to try, this retreat is for you.
If you have any concerns or questions about accessibility, mobility limitations, etc., please reach out! I’d love to speak with you.
🔑 Why I Created This Retreat
I traveled to Sayulita in April 2024 to visit my friend Chel Rogerson. Chel is the founder of Sayulita’s Evoka Yoga School, and a reiki practitioner and wellness coach. Chel and I have been friends for 20 years!
We met long ago working as marketing contractors for a Fortune 500 company. We have collaborated many times since we ditched corporate life and started our own wellness businesses. Chel co-hosted a Body Positive Yoga Retreat with me in the Outer Banks in 2017.
I went to Sayulita because I was feeling uninspired, depressed, and stuck. My whole life had come apart: I was freshly divorced after a 20-year relationship and only beginning to process the serious ramifications that the pandemic had on my life, work, and relationships. I had lost trust and faith in myself, which was affecting my ability to create new work or make money.
I needed a change of scenery, bad.
I needed to remember who I was before my whole life came apart at the seams.
Mexico brought me back to life. Feeling the sun on my skin, tasting the salt in the air, hearing a new language all around me, walking everywhere I went, the dust of the streets, the sunsets, the colors, the food!
Suddenly I didn’t feel like the depressed hollow shell of myself I found in my apartment back home. I wasn’t crying every day. I felt grounded. I even looked better. I felt like I had discovered something magical.
Traveling to a new place allowed me to see myself in a different light. I lived the rhythm of Chel’s life for a week. I got up early and surfed, took afternoon siestas, and didn’t miss a single sunset. Suddenly, I could imagine a different life for myself. I felt inspired for the first time in a long time.
I went surfing five times in Mexico and I’ve been obsessed to go back ever since. While I was surfing in Sayulita, the vision for this retreat came to me as sat on my surfboard, watching the waves. It came to me as I wandered the streets of Sayulita and got to know its rhythm.
It’s a long story, but at one point, I honestly never thought I’d lead another yoga retreat again. But Mexico had other ideas for me. I could see it happening.
I believe it’s my life’s purpose to create community experiences to help people realize their own personal power so we can take better care of each other and our planet. As I am envisioning this retreat, I see a beautiful group of humans coming together who are ready to challenge the ways society has trained us to limit ourselves. I can’t wait for all of us to try new things within a supportive community and prove ourselves (and everyone else) wrong about what we are capable of.
I am forever grateful for my friend Chel for helping me find my inspiration again and showing me her beautiful home. I hope you will love Sayulita as much as I do. Muchas gracias, Chel. You are my favorite mermaid!

Absolutely changed my life
I have attended two retreats that Amber organized and hosted and have also subscribed to her online yoga content. Amber has a gift for creating community, providing high quality and impactful content, and making individuals feel seen, heard and supported.
The first retreat I attended with her absolutely changed my life. There is a very special magic when you find “your people” and are guided and supported by an insightful person like Amber in experiences that lift you up and teach you measurable ways to improve through self-acceptance.
As an introvert, I had a lot of fears about attending a retreat with strangers. But I could not have had a better experience with Amber in the way she created and cultivated connection between the attendees, set up meaningful activities, and shared herself so much with us.

What They’re Saying
I attended every single retreat she offered one year
Amber Karnes is someone I’ve had the pleasure of learning yoga from, attending retreats and collaborating with as a wellness practitioner. One of the things that’s been a pleasure throughout all of my experiences is the thoughtfulness and impact of her work.
She is always there in her students minds or in the retreat participants hearts, creating an unforgettable and transformative experience that is centered around personal and collective empowerment. And working with her is FUN. She’s driven, creative and is a powerhouse of taking a project from idea to completion.
There’s a reason why I attended every single retreat she offered one year, trust.

Mindbody Coach, The Curiosity Cure
I didn’t think my second retreat could be better than my first. I have grown so much using my experience from my first retreat to the this second one. I maintained friendships, made new ones, deepened my connection with myself, others, and with my practice. It has taught me how to use what I feel on my mat and share it with the world. Most of all it has given me a place to calm my mind, feel confident, and be more authentic with myself. Loved every minute!
I’d recommend this retreat to a friend because it was such a nourishing experience – I felt my body and soul get stronger, I felt my intentions take a more meaningful shape, I felt refueled. Plus, all the lovely people there are so supportive and made me feel like I had found a new community.
Amber is very good at pulling people out of their shell. I learned so much, but I also felt so comfortable in her environment and she made modifications for my back problem. She’s very good at reaching people where they are and a joy to learn from.
I attended a Body Positive Yoga retreat with Amber and it was life-changing, life-affirming, actually!
Amber’s care, compassion, commitment, and drive is what still has me doing yoga and still working on me and my overall health (body, mind, and spirit). She gave me the tools I needed to move forward on my health and self love journey.
Being in a community of intelligent, authentic and like minded, yet diverse women is exceptionally empowering.
To know there are others out there that you can identify with, learn from, and share community with is so impactful and can be carried with you in everyday life wherever you go.
I was pretty skeptical about what to expect, despite having signed up on a last minute whim. I deal with social anxiety and struggle to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to meeting new people. This was a great opportunity to challenge my own insecurities and do so in a supportive environment with other women who face the same internal conflicts.
How powerful community can be. It was so wonderful being around women who were committed (even at different levels) to achieving body peace.
I love looking at our bodies together and witnessing the power that we hold to heal ourselves and each other.
I think what Amber does is so important in holding space for us to find one another and lead us through example, wisdom, kindness, and humor.
Community building is a special skill that, with Amber, comes from her heart and a passion for the ways we can see and be seen in the world with compassion.
My Body Positive Yoga class with Amber was the real but very needed compassionate check-in toward living in a body that’s different. She gifted me her focused attention, thoughtful words, and movement to love myself wholly.

About Your Host
Hey, I’m Amber Karnes. I’m a community builder, yoga teacher, educator, and artist.
I am a curious, multi-passionate person and a connector. Over the past 25 years I have built communities and thrown events around yoga, art, craft, graphic design, food justice, the hardcore punk music scene, bikelife, entrepreneurship, and more. I went to school for graphic design and for 10 years, I worked in design and marketing roles in corporate, nonprofits, and as a freelancer.
The past 14 years I’ve been building community (and a business) around yoga. I am the creator of Body Positive Yoga, which is both a teaching method and a community about body liberation and accessibility. Among other learning experiences, I have sold out over a dozen wellness retreats over the past 10 years. Retreats are absolutely my favorite way to work.
Before March 2020, I was traveling full-time, leading workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings. Then the pandemic happened and changed everything about my work (and the whole yoga industry). I stopped traveling and helped the yoga industry get online during the pandemic. Nowadays most of my work is supporting other solo business owners through 1:1 business coaching and marketing strategy.
I’m still in the process of figuring out what the rest of my business looks like, now that “traveling yoga teacher” isn’t really a job anymore. I am rolling out some new work which includes marketing clinics for micro business owners, adventure retreats like this one, the Pivot Retreat, a marketing game show, and more.
It is clear that Amber brings authenticity, integrity, curiosity, and compassion wherever she goes. She lives her yoga. For non-yogis, this means that her yoga goes beyond making shapes with her body on a rubber rectangle (which is fun but not all there is).
She speaks hard truths with kindness and demonstrates HOW to make yoga accessible for all. She finds creative ways to support and inspire through both written word AND via open hearted conversations. Her openness to learn while teaching is what makes her such a solid teacher of teachers.
I am a better teacher and student thanks to her. The world is a better place because Amber Karnes is in it.

Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. I strongly advise everyone to purchase travel insurance in connection with all bookings. While the coverage provided by travel insurance varies based on the policy you purchase, as a general rule, this type of insurance may provide coverage for a variety of losses which you may incur relating to a booking, including losses relating to trip cancellation, illness, injury, theft, lost or damaged property, etc.
Be aware that, except for the limited refund rights in the cancellation policy, you are 100% responsible for any losses, penalties, fees, or other financial consequences arising out of any booking or trip, or the cancellation or interruption of any booking or trip (including, by way of example, costs related to airline tickets and fees, passport fees, visa fees, medical expenses, etc.).
For all of these reasons, I urge you to purchase travel insurance promptly following booking.
What airport should I fly into?
Please fly into the Puerto Vallarta airport (PVR). Transfers will be arranged from the airport only.
Arrival transfers will only be offered for flights arriving between the hours of 12pm and 5pm on arrival day and flights departing between 10am and 4pm on the departure date.
It’s about 45 minutes to 1 hour drive from the airport to Sayulita, depending on traffic.
What time should I arrive and depart?
In order to take advantage of transfers to our hotel, please note: arrival transfers will only be offered for flights arriving between the hours of 12pm and 5pm on arrival day and flights departing between 10am and 4pm on the departure date.
Is this retreat for women only?
This retreat is for women and gender minorities. It is not a space for cisgender men.
Let me try my best to be clear. Women (and people of other gender identities who grew up socialized as women) share certain lived experiences in our patriarchal culture. We receive implicit and explicit messages about “our place in things” that men don’t. We’ll be untangling the ways that cultural conditioning about womanhood overlaps with our sense of self, especially with regards to body image.
This retreat is a space for women as well as anyone who was raised or socialized as a woman. Trans women are welcome, as well as transmasc and non-binary folks who were socialized as women (regardless of how they identify). It is not a space for cisgender men.
If you have questions about whether you should attend, please contact me and we can discuss!
Tell me about the food!
Meals included in this retreat:
- Welcome dinner at our hotel
- Breakfast buffet every morning at our hotel
- Lunch at Chumuk, a local farm-to-table restaurant
All other meals, you will get yourself, dining out in town. Catering group meals at the hotel is quite expensive, so I structured it this way to keep costs down.
I also wanted to give you the chance to experience the amazing Mexican food and culture of Sayulita by eating in its many local restaurants.
The food is fresh, affordable, and lovingly prepared. I have never had a bad meal in this town! I ate almost exclusively vegetarian when I was there, many restaurants have good vegan and gluten-free options.
When you register, you’ll have a chance to tell me about any dietary restrictions so I can make sure the hotel caterers take good care of you.
If I want a shared room, can you help me find a roommate?
Yes! If you book into a shared room and are coming alone, we will pair you with another retreat participant who’s requesting the same room type.
You’re also welcome to book shared accommodations with a friend. Let me know you’re booking together when you register.
What if I want to share a room with 2 or more friends?
If you’re traveling in a group of 3 or 4, let me know when you register. I may be able to shift you to a more suitable room within the hotel (2 queen beds, or a small suite with 3 beds). Booking availability is subject to change at any time, so book early to ensure your desired arrangement!
What do I need to bring?
I’ll send you a complete packing list before the retreat, but you don’t need any complicated or fancy items. Sayulita is a beach town and extremely casual.
I’ll be bringing comfortable, casual clothing, a couple bathing suits, cover-ups for the beach and pool, comfortable walking shoes, and stuff like sunscreen and bug repellant.
I have a question you didn't answer here.
Reach out to me and let’s talk!
About the Experience
Do most retreat participants come alone?
Yes, many of my guests do come alone. But by the end of their stay they usually have made some great new friends. I’ve heard from folks who retreated with me a decade ago that are still friends with each other today!
How big is the group?
I am planning for us to be a group of 12-15, depending how folks book into the rooms.

Will I be able to keep up in the yoga classes?
Yes! I specialize in adaptive, inclusive yoga practice for all bodies and ability levels. This is low-pressure, judgment-free yoga led by a “non-typical”, plus size yoga teacher.
The yoga that I practice is not designed to be a strenuous workout. These are easy movements and big deep breaths that meet your body where you are today. Lots of options and modifications will be offered for any practice I lead.
We will workshop and troubleshoot poses or transitions that don’t work for our bodies, and you’ll leave with new tools to personalize your practice.
Will I really be able to surf?
Yes!
As a beginner surfer, I’ve noticed that surfing is made up of 2 main things: catching waves and all the other stuff.
Catching waves looks like:
- Riding the waves mermaid style on your belly
- Cruising into shore riding the board on your knees or in a kneeling lunge position
- Standing on the board for a second and falling off
- Standing on the board for a few seconds at a time (then, falling off)
- Falling off at any time for no reason when you thought you “did it right”
- Getting tumbled around by the waves after you fall off, pretty much every time 😂
- And so on
But catching waves is a small part of surfing. Surfing also looks like all this stuff:
- Putting on your rash guard and sunscreen
- Carrying your board to the beach
- Warming up your body with some stretches and movements
- Practicing your pop-up
- Walking or paddling your board out to where we catch waves
- Learning to paddle your board
- Learning how to navigate waves while on your board
- Learning to balance on your board on your belly
- Learning to sit on your board
- Learning to read waves
- Learning where not to be when a wave comes in
- Sitting on your board watching for waves
- Carrying your board back up the beach
- Digging sand out of every crevice 😂
Surfing is a fun, challenging, complicated activity. You may be wondering, “Will I stand up on the surfboard and catch a wave?”
Many, many people do stand up during their first lesson! There’s no guarantees in life (especially in the ocean, with constantly changing conditions), but to manage your expectations:
I took my first surf lesson at age 42 in Sayulita. I stood up on the board 4 times during my very first surf lesson. I would estimate that in a week of surfing, with about 100 attempts to catch waves, I stood up 6 times. Your mileage may vary.
Everyone that attempts surfing will catch a wave. Some of us will go in on our bellies (it’s so fun this way, you look cute, feel like a mermaid, and everyone’s butt looks good in this position 😂), some of us will catch waves on our knees or a kneeling lunge position, some of us will stand up for a few waves.
I’m hiring a photographer to capture pictures of our surf lesson. You’ll get a professional photograph to remember your experience. I can’t wait to share your first surfing lesson with you!!
If you want to take more than one surf lesson, I’ll connect you with our instructors so you can arrange it while we’re in town. They can take you to other beaches in the area, too.
How much walking is required?
Sayulita is a small, walkable town, and our hotel is a 5-minute walk from the beach, restaurants, nightclubs, pharmacies, and more.
If you don’t want to walk everywhere, that’s cool! Take it easy! There are many rental agencies in town that will rent you golf carts, scooters, bicycles, or motorcycles at affordable prices so you can explore at your own pace.

Is it safe to travel to Mexico?
Yes, Mexico is generally safe for travelers who take basic precautions, just as you would in any large city around the world.
Mexico is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors each year who enjoy its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and vibrant cities safely. Like any place, there are areas with higher crime rates, but Sayulita is a small town with very little crime. It’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuables, and take extra precaution if walking alone at night.
That being said, I rode public buses in Mexico and walked alone at night several times in Sayulita and never felt unsafe. I honestly felt much safer in Sayulita than I have in many places in the U.S. where I have lived.
I’m arranging trusted transportation services from the airport and we’ll have a group orientation about safety when you arrive, but if you follow common-sense guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy a safe and memorable trip to Mexico.
Do I need a passport or visa?
U.S. citizens will need a passport to visit Mexico, but no visa is required at this time. Passports will require at least one blank page for an entry stamp. Entry information can change so please visit the State Department page for up to date information.
Citizens of all other countries should check travel requirements well in advance of their retreat.
Is there WiFi? Will my phone work in Mexico?
Yes, the hotel has WiFi throughout, as do many cafes and restaurants in Sayulita.
Check with your cell phone provider about cell service in Mexico. Many U.S. cell phones will work with no modifications, some will need to purchase an additional plan to use while you travel, and others will need to notify their cell provider about the travel in order for the phone to work outside the U.S.
You should call your cell provider well in advance of getting to Mexico to ensure uninterrupted service.
Do I need to convert cash to pesos?
Yes, you will need to have some cash on hand. Many businesses in Sayulita take credit cards, CashApp, or Venmo, but some are cash only. You’ll also want cash on hand for gratuities and other incidentals.
I recommend avoiding the currency exchange at the airport. The rates are terrible compared to what you’ll get at the ATMs in Sayulita.
Check the exchange rate that your bank offers before you get to Mexico to ensure that you’re getting a good rate from the local ATM. You can choose to decline the local rate and use your bank’s rate if that is better. Most Mexican banks will have staff that speaks English if you need help.
Do I need to speak Spanish to come on this retreat?
Not really! The staff at the hotel speak English, as do many of the people working in hospitality in Mexico. You should be able to get away with ordering in restaurants and buying things in shops just fine with English and a little creativity. Smiles, gestures, “por favor” and “gracias” can get you far.
However, I recommend learning a little bit of Spanish for travelers, it will make you more confident and make life easier for you when you’re in town dining and shopping. Plus, your world opens up when you interact with locals in their own language. Learning a little Spanish shows respect to the people whose home we are enjoying.
After my trip to Sayulita in April 2024, I started learning and practicing Spanish using the Language Transfer podcast. It’s an amazing resource for learning conversational Spanish quickly, and I highly recommend it. It makes language learning feel like a game! There are also lots of great YouTube videos that will teach you some basics.
