🌴 What To Expect

Uvita Beach, Plus Size Yoga & Adventure Retreat for Women in Costa Rica

On your arrival day in Costa Rica, you’ll fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) and take a private shuttle to a local hotel. We will gather for dinner as a group, meet one another, and get a good night’s sleep before our departure to the retreat center the next morning.

Once we arrive, I’ll welcome you to our home for the week: a private jungle mountain villa with panoramic views of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. With ocean-view shalas, plant-based cuisine, curated nature experiences, and luxury accommodations, every detail invites presence and connection.

Every day will be a blend of adventure and relaxation. Yoga workshops, body image discussions, and fun art experiments will be interwoven with adventurous excursions to a truly one-of-a-kind natural waterfall and swimming at an iconic whale-tail-shaped beach that only appears at low tide.

🦋 Finally, Retreats Built for Bigger Bodies

Inclusive adventures that work for your body, not against it.

I have led over a dozen wellness retreats over the years, and I design my retreats specifically with fat and plus-size travelers in mind.

While this retreat is open to folks of all shapes and sizes who are exploring body acceptance, I center larger bodies in my work.

The tiniest details are important to me so you can have an excellent experience: seating that works for your body, equipment like lifejackets being available in your size, and providing lots of information about accessibility and activities so you can self-select what works for you.

check out this highlight reel from Wild Bodies Mexico 2025!

When it comes to meeting accessibility needs, I’m not perfect, but I’m responsive as heck. I iterate every retreat based on feedback from my guests, and if there’s a problem that needs solving, I do my level best to solve it for you right away so that you can be comfortable.

At my retreats, I create a supportive environment where no one gets left behind, so you can safely push your limits in a group of other fun, positive folks without worrying about keeping up or fitting in.

Expect experiences where you can try something challenging (like swimming below a waterfall, doing a headstand, or exploring body image) in a supportive environment.

Plus size Mexico adventure retreat with manatees

We’re gonna celebrate each other when we feel awkward and when we win. And we’ll have so much fun learning and practicing together. My face always hurts from laughing and smiling so much at these events. 😂

If you have any concerns about whether this retreat is right for you (if you have questions about accessibility, mobility limitations, activity levels, or anything else) please reach out! I’d love to speak with you and answer your questions.

Wake up and enjoy breakfast and coffee at the hotel before our 8am departure to the retreat. Our private villa is quite remote, which adds to the magic and wildness of our week together. We will take safe, private transportation to the retreat center (4-hour drive), complete with a stop about halfway for bathroom breaks and so you can buy some snacks and use the ATM to get local currency.

Upon arrival to the villa, drop your luggage at your room and then go straight to a delicious lunch that’s prepared for us. DAY 3

Marino Ballena National Park & Uvita Beach

Wake up for an early morning yoga practice before heading to breakfast to get your energy ready for our beach excursion.

We will visit the stunning Marino Ballena National Park, a coastal paradise that combines pristine beaches, lush mangroves, and a vibrant marine ecosystem. This magnificent park spans over 13,000 acres, encompassing both land and sea, and is named after the awe-inspiring humpback whales that grace its waters.

As you step foot onto the pristine shores of Playa Uvita, you’ll be greeted by stretches of soft golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The park’s iconic feature, the whale tail-shaped sandbar, emerges during low tide, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that captures the imagination.

If we’re lucky, we may even witness majestic humpback whales breaching the surface, as they migrate through these waters from December to April.

After our beach excursion, enjoy some downtime in the afternoon. We’ll have dinner together in the evening and afterward, gather at the pool to share stories and memories from the day.

DAY 4

Nauyaca Waterfall & Yoga Nidra

Wake to the sounds of the jungle and join us for a nourishing breakfast before we depart for our daytrip to the awe-inspiring Nauyaca waterfall.

After our 1-hour drive and tour of the area, you’ll meet the waterfall. Nauyaca waterfall towers at an impressive height, unleashing a powerful torrent of water that descends into a series of pristine pools below.

Dive into the inviting turquoise pools, feeling the invigorating rush of the cascading water against your skin. Relax on the riverbanks, surrounded by the symphony of nature, as toucans soar overhead and colorful butterflies dance in the air.

After we return from our adventure, enjoy some downtime before dinner and afterward, relax in the pool with your new friends as the sounds of the jungle surround us. Before bedtime, my guest teacher Chel will be leading a Yoga Nidra session (deep, guided relaxation) for your best night’s sleep ever!

Art & body image workshop, Wild Bodies retreat 2025

DAY 5

Body Acceptance & Creativity

After breakfast, we’ll gather for an art & body image workshop. During this session, we’ll be exploring body image through journaling, discussion, and low-pressure, easy collage art. We’ll discuss our experiences at the beach and waterfall, and take inspiration from our connection with nature to infuse into our art and writing.

If you don’t think of yourself as an artist, don’t worry. I will demonstrate some easy collage techniques and ideas. I’ll have plenty of creative prompts for you to work with and lots of fun materials like images for collaging, paint, glue, markers, and other fun decorative items. This is art you can’t mess up!

You’ll have the afternoon free to explore or rest as you please. We’ll meet for a pre-dinner yoga session, then after a delicious meal, we’ll wrap our day with a sharing circle around the pool as the sun sets.

Headstand party - Body Positive Yoga retreat
Boruca mask painting workshop, Plus Size Yoga & Adventure Retreat for Women in Costa Rica

DAY 6

Yoga Workshop & Boruca Mask Painting

After breakfast, join me for a Body Positive Yoga workshop. Bring any questions you have about the yoga practice: poses you have trouble with or questions about how to personalize the practice for your unique body. I’ll be sharing some of my tried and true tips for making yoga work for your body, and we’ll finish with one of my signature events: Headstand Party (the hype is all true).

After lunch, immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Costa Rica with a Boruca mask painting workshop led by a local Indigenous leader from the Boruca community. In this hands-on experience, you’ll learn the history and symbolism behind the vibrant, hand-carved masks used in traditional festivals.

Using natural pigments and techniques passed down through generations, you’ll paint your own mask while gaining insight into Boruca art, identity, and resistance. It’s a powerful opportunity to engage with local wisdom, support cultural preservation, and take home a meaningful, one-of-a-kind creation.

Take the afternoon to rest and do whatever calls to you: get a massage or spa treatment, spend time in the pool or hot tub, take a gorgeous nap, read a book, use the art supplies to make a collage, or explore the property. After dinner, Chel will facilitate a healing circle which includes reiki, sound healing, chakra balancing, and reflection practices.

DAY 7

Self Expression: Printmaking & Dance

During our last yoga class together, we’ll greet the sun as the sounds of the jungle surround us.

After breakfast, we’ll gather for another art workshop: monoprinting with plants. During this fun and easy activity, we will create one-of-a-kind art prints using beautiful jungle plants found right on the property.

Take the afternoon to rest, explore, or chat with your new BFFs. In the evening after dinner, I’ll host a dance party with a special twist: an incredible live DJ performance by a local musician and artist, plus other can’t-miss surprises.

There’s no better way to end this unforgettable week together than dancing as the sun sets next to the gorgeous pool (or swimming while you enjoy the music). Come feel free with us. My dance parties are a vibe. IYKYK.

DAY 8

Goodbye (Until Next Year)

On our last morning together, we’ll have an early breakfast and say our goodbyes & see ya laters. Private transportation will bring us back to San Jose airport for a safe flight home.

I attended every single retreat she offered one year

Amber Karnes is someone I’ve had the pleasure of learning yoga from, attending retreats and collaborating with as a wellness practitioner. One of the things that’s been a pleasure throughout all of my experiences is the thoughtfulness and impact of her work.

She is always there in her students minds or in the retreat participants hearts, creating an unforgettable and transformative experience that is centered around personal and collective empowerment. And working with her is FUN. She’s driven, creative and is a powerhouse of taking a project from idea to completion.

There’s a reason why I attended every single retreat she offered one year, trust.

🥙 Farm-To-Table, Plant-Based Cuisine

Vegan cuisine, Plus Size Yoga & Adventure Retreat for Women in Costa Rica

This venue is known for its creative vegan chef and healthy, locally sourced meals that not only nourish and satisfy the senses but also maintain alignment with the venue’s permaculture practices.

All cuisine is organic and much of it is sustainably-grown, seasonal fresh food straight from their own farm. Additional ingredients are sourced from local organic farmers.

Our all-vegan menu is more than a week of beautiful meals, it’s an experiment in how deeply nourishing, creative, and satisfying plant-based eating can be. When you register, you’ll have the option to add eggs to breakfast, if you wish. During this week of plant based eating, you’ll be treating your body to fresh, whole foods and invited to honor ahimsa, the yoga principle of kindness in action.

In addition to 3 generously-portioned meals and a delicious dessert, unlimited smoothies and elixirs from the bar are available on-demand all week, made fresh for you from over 40 varieties of fruit that are grown on-site.

There will also be alcohol available at the bar if you feel like purchasing a drink to unwind, but we invite you to try something different. This retreat is a chance to reset: with a fresh, all-plant-based menu, perhaps you let your body take a break from alcohol too. See how you feel after a few days of nourishing food, clear mind, and deep rest. Alcohol is not included in the retreat cost.

Absolutely changed my life

I have attended two retreats that Amber organized and hosted and have also subscribed to her online yoga content. Amber has a gift for creating community, providing high quality and impactful content, and making individuals feel seen, heard and supported.

The first retreat I attended with her absolutely changed my life. There is a very special magic when you find “your people” and are guided and supported by an insightful person like Amber in experiences that lift you up and teach you measurable ways to improve through self-acceptance.

As an introvert, I had a lot of fears about attending a retreat with strangers. But I could not have had a better experience with Amber in the way she created and cultivated connection between the attendees, set up meaningful activities, and shared herself so much with us.

About Your Host

Amber Karnes in her apartment in Baltimore, Maryland

Amber Karnes

I’m Amber Karnes. I’m a multi-disciplinary artist, community builder, educator, and yoga teacher.

I am a curious, multi-passionate person and a connector. Over the past 25 years I have built communities and thrown events around yoga, art, craft, graphic design, food justice, the hardcore punk music scene, bikelife, entrepreneurship, and more.

Art & self-expression, my inspiration for this retreat

I’ve always been into making art. My mom nurtured my creativity as a kid and I experimented with every media from painting to photography.

I also was online from an early age (before AOL even existed) and at age 16 taught myself HTML code and made my own website from scratch, where I shared my daily thoughts before blog was a word. (I am old in internet years.)

I went to art school in college where I developed a love of printmaking, especially linoleum block printing and letterpress, and earned a BFA in graphic design. For 10 years, I worked as an art director and graphic designer and held marketing roles in corporate, at nonprofits, and as a freelancer.

Amber Karnes in her apartment in Baltimore, Maryland
Amber Karnes contact page

I also was an art director for 2 record labels and made countless album layouts, t-shirt designs, posters, stickers, patches, buttons, and other merchandise for hardcore punk, metal, and indie rock bands. I made letterpress art and learned bookmaking as a member of Virginia Arts of the Book center for several years.

In my 30s, I built community for independent artists and crafters. Our collective hosted skillshares, supply swaps, social crafting circles, juried craft markets, networking events, and more. I was heavy into knitting and sewing my own clothes and had an Etsy shop where I sold handmade items.

I have a lifelong love of stickers (starting with Lisa Frank in the 90s 🦄). For several years in Baltimore I ran a youth-driven custom graphics and bike sticker business. I love designing custom sticker sheets for all kinds of reasons (ask me, I’m obsessed!).

Yoga & body acceptance

When I found yoga in my early 20s, it started a decades-long journey of learning how to live well in this wild body of mine.

You can read a short summary of my long journey with body acceptance here.

Eventually I became a yoga teacher and the past 14 years I’ve been building community (and a business) around yoga.

I am the creator of Body Positive Yoga, which is both a teaching method and a community about body liberation and accessibility.

I’ve created a bunch of stuff in yoga-land, including the Accessible Yoga School, Yoga for All Training, and many workshops and intensives on body acceptance through the lens of the yoga teachings.

Amber Karnes Yoga Journal Cover
a collage of recent images of me

I write and teach about body acceptance and how you can use your yoga practice to come home to your body and feel more comfortable in your skin. I love facilitating conversations about why we feel the way we do about our bodies and how we can have a healthy relationship with our appearance.

My newest yoga offering is an online yoga clubhouse called amberhouse. I hope you’ll join me for a class sometime!

In my work, I also support small business owners around marketing strategy, especially marketing without social media.

Meet my friend Chel: guest teacher & healer

I’m especially excited about this retreat in this location. I’m also bringing Chel, one of my longest-standing friends, with me! Learn more about her (and our friendship) below.

Chel Rogerson

Guest Teacher & Healer

Chel Rogerson is a former corporate marketing executive turned yoga teacher, surfer, and Reiki Master who decided to escape the grind and start a purpose-led life in tropical Mexico.

She met Amber 20 years ago when they were working together for a Fortune 500 company, before they became yoga teachers!

Chel once had stifling body image and self-confidence issues. After moving through some heavy life challenges, she walked into yoga and dance classes for the first time approaching 30 and instantly found freedom and joy in movement.

Chel Rogerson - Sayulita Reiki & Yoga teacher
Chel Rogerson - Sayulita Reiki & Yoga teacher

She began to explore healing through dance, yoga, and circus arts. Years of this journey finally helped her overcome her fear of wearing shorts, leggings, or (gasp!) a bikini — changing the trajectory of her life. She started to perform pole dance and hula hoop and travel the world surfing.

Chel Rogerson - Sayulita Reiki & Yoga teacher

Since becoming a yoga teacher in 2013, Chel has offered yoga classes, mindfulness meditation, yoga nidra and energy healing. She is the founder of EVOKA | Sayulita Yoga School offering 200-hour yoga teacher trainings in Mexico.

Chel lives in Sayulita, Mexico, often visiting back to her home in Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Amber & Chel

20 Years of Friendship & Peer Mentorship

Amber Karnes & Chel Rogerson, co-hosts Wild Bodies

I’m so excited to bring Chel to this retreat as a guest teacher and healer. I can’t wait for you to meet and and understand why Chel has been a powerful presence in my orbit ever since I met her. Chel and I have been friends for 20 years!

We met long ago, working as marketing professionals for a Fortune 500 company. We have collaborated many times since we ditched corporate life and started our own wellness businesses.

Chel co-hosted a Body Positive Yoga Retreat with me in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 2017, where she taught pole and hoop dancing and we watched the solar eclipse together with our retreat guests while standing in the Atlantic ocean. We also collaborated on my Mexico surfing & yoga retreats in 2025, and it made me excited to host more experiences together.

Amber Karnes & Chel Rogerson, co-hosts Wild Bodies

She introduced me to surfing for the first time (a current obsession) and shared her life with me for a week: one that was grounded in nature, yoga, peace, and healing. Suddenly, I could imagine a different life for myself. I felt inspired for the first time in a long time.

After that trip, I kicked myself into high gear. I moved in with my parents, started taking excellent care of my body and mind, and created the Mexico Surfing & Yoga Retreat, which rekindled my love for yoga teaching and leading retreats. The first Wild Bodies retreat and amberhouse yoga club followed soon after. I feel like I am back and so excited about the new work I am creating.

I’ll be forever grateful for Chel’s many influences on my life, and our countless conversations about yoga, body image, feminism, spirituality, business, and life.

Come hang out with us in Costa Rica and feel the energy of our strength in collaboration, which is such a vibe.

Amber & Chel at the beach together in Mexico

Chel and I have continued to be in each other’s lives, sometimes on a daily basis, and sometimes with long stretches of time between our visits. But our friendship and peer mentorship to one another is something I have always treasured. Nowadays, our paths are running parallel once again.

In April 2024, I visited Chel in Sayulita, Mexico, feeling uninspired, depressed, and stuck. My whole life had come apart: I was freshly divorced after a 20-year relationship and processing the serious ramifications that the pandemic had on my life, work, and relationships. I had lost trust and faith in myself.

Chel really brought me back to life on that trip.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is now mandatory for my international retreats. I highly advise everyone to purchase a travel insurance plan that includes “cancel for any reason” coverage. You must buy this type of policy within two weeks of making your deposit for this trip, so do not delay. Read more about travel insurance in the FAQ.

Travel insurance is a minor cost to add protection to your significant investment in this trip. It will protect your investment in case the trip has to cancel for any reason, or if you are unable to attend for a variety of reasons.

Schedule Changes
International travel and group travel built with accessibility in mind require flexibility and a positive mental attitude. Activities, excursions, and itinerary may change at any time, depending on availability, weather, and what I determine is most appropriate for the group’s wellbeing. I adapt the itinerary to the group, and design the event around the person or people who need the most support, so everyone can be included.

🐠 Why I Created Wild Bodies

I dreamed for a long time about a community space where we could explore body image through art, yoga, and adventurous connections with nature.

In August 2025, I created the first Wild Bodies retreat in the beautiful Mayan Riviera of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. It was an unforgettable week of friendship, self-expression, and joy! I’m so excited to bring the Wild Bodies retreat to a brand new location in Costa Rica.

Snorkeling in a cenote at the Wild Bodies retreat in Mexico
Baby hippo

Sometimes I wonder…

👶 Why do we think chubby thighs and fat rolls are adorable on a new baby,  but feel disgusted by our own soft, squishy parts?

🦛 Why can we admire the power, humor, and mischief of a baby hippo (fat, aggressive, and unapologetically itself), yet we shrink ourselves, trying to fit into a mold of acceptability?

🌊 The shimmering texture of water is beautiful to me. But when I see a similar texture on my own body, silvery stretch marks or the crinkly skin that comes with aging, why do I feel discomfort and the urge to smooth it out?

Someone once said, a weed is a flower in the wrong place. What if we applied this same logic to our bodies and what we believe about our appearance?

A collage by Rachel K. from the Wild Bodies Mexico Retreat, August 2025

collage by a retreat participant, Wild Bodies Mexico 2025

Baby hippo

What if cellulite, stretch marks, scars, our own body’s shape and size… are all just beauty “in the wrong place”?

Our brains are full of shortcuts that tell us which parts of ourselves aren’t acceptable—shortcuts shaped by culture, media, and shame. But when we step back, we often find that what we judge in ourselves, we admire in babies, nature, animals or other people.

What if we’ve been wrong all along about these wild, weird, imperfect, amazing human bodies?

For one week, let’s co-create a different world:

  • Explore your relationship to body image and self-acceptance through yoga, art, and nature
  • Connect with creativity through fun, low-pressure art activities like collage, printmaking, cultural art experiences, and dance
  • Feel held and supported by a community of open-minded, curious, non-judgmental women
  • Explore opportunities to push beyond your comfort zone in a brave, transformative way
  • Come back to your body and yourself in a new place

A retreat isn’t just a vacation; it’s an intentional space to get to know yourself better and learn things in community.

Travel has a unique kind of magic. For many of us, it offers a chance to step out of the day-to-day and see ourselves in a new light.

Join me and learn something new about yourself in Costa Rica.

Accessibility & Activity Levels

If you have questions or accessibility needs not covered here, please reach out ahead of booking. Caring for you and your body on this trip is my top priority and I’d love to make your participation in the retreat work for you. Book a call with me or email me to discuss.

I’m including information about activity levels and accessibility here so you can know if this retreat is appropriate for you and be prepared ahead of time with information.

Retreat Activity Level: 2/5

Activities: Yoga, dance, swimming, some walking

Accessibility Information About The Venue

Help is available getting your luggage to your room or whatever assistance you may need. There is a golf cart on site should you need extra support getting to and from your room. 15 staff members work at the villa and will be there to assist us all week. Please see the map below.

There are 20 big stairs to get to our yoga shala, where we will practice yoga together.

Most rooms are near our dining, yoga, and pool area, but the Bungalow Suites have a walk of 4 minutes to get from the room to the main gathering areas. Bali Suites & Bali Double rooms are an 8-minute walk, which includes some stairs.

If you choose to add on a massage or spa treatment, it is a 6 minute walk with some stairs.

Some rooms are upstairs: Deluxe Bali Suites and Bungalow Suites have 10 stairs to access the room.

There are paths and trails around the property that you may explore. All trails are gravel and the terrain varies, as this is a jungle mountain property.

If you have any accessibility needs before or during the retreat, please let me know as soon as possible. I am not perfect, but I’m responsive as heck and truly want to make you as comfortable as possible.

Food & Dietary Needs

This venue is known for its creative vegan chef and healthy, locally sourced meals that maintain alignment with the venue’s permaculture practices. All cuisine is organic and much of it is sustainably-grown, seasonal fresh food straight from their own farm. Additional ingredients are sourced from local organic farmers.

Their standards are extremely high, and the food is sure to be incredible. I have vetted this place through friends who booked there repeatedly, and their online reviews are impeccable (email me if you’d like the links, I keep location names private for security reasons).

We will have a custom menu for our week together, but you can get a good idea about the food by viewing these menus:

View the restaurant menu
View the bar menu

Each day’s food includes:

  • 3 generously-portioned, plant-based meals
  • A delicious vegan dessert
  • Unlimited smoothies and elixirs from the bar are available on-demand (made fresh for you from over 40 varieties of fruit that are grown on-site)
  • You have the option to add eggs to breakfast, which you can choose when you register.
  • Free access to ice and water at all times.
  • Food allergies and dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

There is no meat allowed on the property.

Every room includes a mini-fridge, and you may purchase snacks and drinks on our stop on the way in. Once you are at the retreat center, you must hire a private taxi in order to leave, which can be quite expensive, so please plan accordingly.

Alcohol & Drug Policy

Alcohol Policy

Alcohol is not included in the retreat cost.

There will be alcohol available at the bar if you feel like purchasing a drink to unwind, but I invite you to try something different.

This retreat is a chance to reset: with a fresh, all-plant-based menu, perhaps you let your body take a break from alcohol too. See how you feel after a few days of nourishing food, clear mind, and deep rest.

If you choose to drink, I ask that you please do so responsibly and respectfully. I encourage us all to keep in mind that we are in another culture, being invited to stay on their sacred land. Please keep the energy of being in community with one another at a retreat center (which is a different vibe from drinking on vacation at a beach resort).

Drug Policy

I ask that everyone refrain from consuming drugs while attending this retreat.

Vaping & Smoking

Vaping is allowed anywhere, including rooms. Smoking is only allowed in the parking area or near the pool if it doesn’t bother other guests. Smoking is never allowed inside rooms.

Accessing Medical Care

The retreat center keeps an up-to-date standard First Aid kit at Reception.

There is a medical center in Uvita, 3.5 miles up a four-wheel-drive road from town.

The nearest hospital, in Puerto Cortés, is a one-hour drive away.

In the case of an accident, injury, illness, theft, or other incidents, you must immediately notify me and a staff member. Emergency procedures are in place at the retreat center to assist us. However, they cannot guarantee necessary medical attention or treatment.

I recommend that your mandatory travel insurance policy covers medical care and transport in Costa Rica. hould you need it. Read more about travel insurance in the FAQ.

COVID & Illness Policy

Participation in any group activity carries a risk of getting sick, especially when people travel to the event. Getting sick at an event, or worse, passing an illness around an event is a huge bummer, but it does happen.

In our post-pandemic world (in which Covid is still very much alive and well) it’s important to have a plan, as all of us have different risk profiles and practices around staying well.

Obviously we want to avoid any illness, but I treat Covid differently because it is an extremely contagious virus, and also extremely common to pass around at events. I also have many guests with compromised immune systems, and with our remote location, accessing medical care will not be simple, so I want to do my best to keep our community safe.

Retreat Agreements
To care for the group and yourself, I’m asking everyone attending this retreat to agree to the following:

  • All retreat participants must test negative for Covid before they leave their home airport for the trip.
  • Please wear a mask in the airport and on the plane. It’s extremely common for someone to get sick while traveling to an event, then pass the illness around at the event. Please mask during your travels to protect your investment in this trip and the health of your fellow community members and retreat staff that you’ll be living with for the week (and their families).
  • If you feel ill at the retreat, please let me know right away. We can make sure you get meals in your room or whatever support you need.
  • I will have Covid tests available at the retreat center. If you feel ill, I will ask you to test for Covid.
  • If you test positive for Covid during the retreat, you will need to isolate. This is a huge disappointment to happen at a retreat, when you’ve anticipated the event so much, so please wear a mask on the plane and in the airport for your best chance at arriving and staying healthy!
  • I ask that if you test negative for Covid but are still feeling ill, especially if you run a fever, that you isolate and rest until you feel well. If you need to be near the group for any reason, I will have masks available.

If you want to see the entire retreat agreement contract before you register, please email me.

Travel Insurance & Illness
You should promtply purchase the mandatory travel insurance so that you can get “cancel for any reason” insurance which may cover your investment in the case you get sick before or during the retreat.

You may also elect to purchase a travel insurance plan that covers medical care or medical transport in Costa Rica. I recommend it, as travel insurance is quite affordable compared to what you are spending on this trip.

Reviews for Wild Bodies retreat

Georgia

Usually at the end of a trip, I dread going back home, or I’m desperate to go home. But today, I have this overwhelming feeling of peace and gratitude. I’m inspired to go back to the life that I get to have, and I’m feeling really motivated.

I was just expecting to have a really fun experience with other cool women, but this was more than I bargained for in a huge way. I get to go back with this whole different version of me; I’ve shed a couple layers and grown a couple of skins.

This retreat is the best gift you can give to yourself because it is truly an investment in your body and nervous system. I will carry so much of what I learned about myself into my real life. And if you already know yourself plenty—you’ll certainly gain some new friends!

The art was hugely impactful and well considered. The dance party was amazing and so much more than I thought it might be!

Georgia

This retreat allowed me to make connections with people who view the world in a similar way that I do, but also allowed me to see the world through new eyes. Retreats like these create spaces where people are free to share their experiences in a non-judgmental space which is both enlightening and healing.

I loved the balance of activities and downtime, it was nice to feel like there was enough time to recharge between activities. I feel like I got more out of them this way. Everyone was so accommodating, it was lovely to feel so cared for.

Amber M.

I particularly enjoyed the group discussions on body image + collage making that followed. Having discussion + prompts and something to create immediately were invaluable to me and something I will carry with me IRL!

Amber, you are amazing at building community and inclusion. This trip exceeded my expectations! I had so much fun that I didn’t want to leave. I felt like I made friends and made meaningful connections.

I feel more confident after this retreat. Both in skin and spirit. I feel like I am allowed to enjoy life and need to do it more often. And really learned a lot about myself and honoring my energy levels. I felt included and a sense of belonging. I belong.

Not only is the focus of the retreat on diving deep into our bravest and most incredible selves, but also the gift of having a week of being cared for – emotionally, physically, by a community with shared experience – is transformative and restful in a way that is so rare.

The feeling of being in community and finding safety to explore the challenges of Wild Bodies has been life-changing, soul searching, and like coming up from the depths in a splash of fun and discovery to the surface of my life.

Thank you for putting these retreats together. You attract the most wonderful people. We get to meet each other and do fun stuff while you facilitate this experience for everyone.

This is my second retreat, and both of them have been amazing. Thank you for being you and for making this experience possible for all of us.

I felt cared for, listened to and seen. Thank you for all your care and attention to the details. I appreciate the way you have such high standards.

More reviews of my retreats

snapshot of the women who attended my first Surfing & Yoga retreat

I didn’t think my second retreat could be better than my first. I have grown so much using my experience from my first retreat to the this second one. I maintained friendships, made new ones, deepened my connection with myself, others, and with my practice.

It has taught me how to use what I feel on my mat and share it with the world. Most of all it has given me a place to calm my mind, feel confident, and be more authentic with myself. Loved every minute!

I’d recommend this retreat to a friend because it was such a nourishing experience – I felt my body and soul get stronger, I felt my intentions take a more meaningful shape, I felt refueled. Plus, all the lovely people there are so supportive and made me feel like I had found a new community.

Amber is very good at pulling people out of their shell. I learned so much, but I also felt so comfortable in her environment and she made modifications for my back problem. She’s very good at reaching people where they are and a joy to learn from.

I attended a Body Positive Yoga retreat with Amber and it was life-changing, life-affirming, actually!

Amber’s care, compassion, commitment, and drive is what still has me doing yoga and still working on me and my overall health (body, mind, and spirit). She gave me the tools I needed to move forward on my health and self love journey.

I was pretty skeptical about what to expect, despite having signed up on a last minute whim. I deal with social anxiety and struggle to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to meeting new people. This was a great opportunity to challenge my own insecurities and do so in a supportive environment with other women who face the same internal conflicts.

Being in a community of intelligent, authentic and like minded, yet diverse women is exceptionally empowering.

To know there are others out there that you can identify with, learn from, and share community with is so impactful and can be carried with you in everyday life wherever you go.

How powerful community can be. It was so wonderful being around women who were committed (even at different levels) to achieving body peace.

I love looking at our bodies together and witnessing the power that we hold to heal ourselves and each other.

I think what Amber does is so important in holding space for us to find one another and lead us through example, wisdom, kindness, and humor.

Community building is a special skill that, with Amber, comes from her heart and a passion for the ways we can see and be seen in the world with compassion.

My Body Positive Yoga class with Amber was the real but very needed compassionate check-in toward living in a body that’s different. She gifted me her focused attention, thoughtful words, and movement to love myself wholly.

About the Experience

Do most retreat participants come alone?

Yes, many of my guests do come alone. But by the end of their stay they usually have made some great new friends. I’ve heard from folks who retreated with me a decade ago that are still friends with each other today!

What do I need to bring?

I’ll send you a complete packing list before the retreat, but you don’t need any complicated or fancy items. Everywhere we go will be extremely casual.

I’ll be bringing comfortable, casual clothing, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sun shirt), a couple bathing suits, cover-ups for the beach and pool, loungewear, comfortable walking shoes, water shoes, yoga clothing, and stuff like sunscreen and bug repellant.

You may want things like a personal fan or special snacks, but we’ll get into those details closer to the retreat.

Provided by the retreat center:

  • Pool towels (onsite use)
  • Beach towels (for excursions)
  • Yoga mats
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Hair dryers in each room
  • Clean drinking water
  • Wi-Fi throughout the property
  • First Aid kit
  • Concierge for off-site bookings
  • Laundry service (additional cost)
How big is the group?
I am planning for us to be a group of 15-20.
Is this retreat for women only?

This retreat is for women and gender minorities. It is not a space for cisgender men.

Let me try my best to be clear. Women (and people of other gender identities who grew up socialized as women) share certain lived experiences in our patriarchal culture. We receive implicit and explicit messages about “our place in things” that men don’t. We’ll be untangling the ways that cultural conditioning about womanhood overlaps with our sense of self, especially with regards to body image.

This retreat is a space for women as well as anyone who was raised or socialized as a woman. Trans women are welcome, as well as transmasc and non-binary folks who were socialized as women (regardless of how they identify). It is not a space for cisgender men.

If you have questions about whether you should attend, please contact me and we can discuss!

Am I too old to come to the retreat?

You’d be amazed at how many women have this question! The other question is, “Will I be the oldest one there?”

Most of my retreat guests are in their early 30s to late 50s. But I’ve had several retreat guests in their 60s and 70s over the 10+ years I’ve been throwing these events. I deeply appreciate inter-generational retreats, it adds layers of perspective and wisdom that benefit the collective.

As one participant said, “I was able to see the wisdom that aging can bring. It was incredibly beautiful to see people, older than I am, loving and caring for their bodies the way that is mindful and intentional. It helped open my eyes to the fact that life, at any age, is what you make of it.”

You are not too old! I hope to see you there.

I'm nervous about being able to keep up with the group during activities.

Please don’t worry. I design my retreats in such a way that we move at the pace of the person who needs the most time and assistance.

No one is ever made to feel “too slow.”

As the person responsible for holding the container of the retreat group, I set the pace for activities and I intentionally lead “from the back of the pack” according to how the group is doing.

Even the most athletic people have bad days, get too hot in the sun, or get their period. So I am always evaluating the group in front of me and making sure that no one is left behind, whether we are doing yoga, walking to dinner, or on an excursion.

View accessibility and activity level info

Will I be able to do the yoga classes?
Yes! I specialize in adaptive, inclusive yoga practice for all bodies and ability levels. This is low-pressure, judgment-free yoga led by a “non-typical”, plus size yoga teacher.

The yoga that I practice is not designed to be a strenuous workout. These are easy movements and big deep breaths that meet your body where you are today. Lots of options and modifications will be offered for any practice I lead.

We will workshop and troubleshoot poses or transitions that don’t work for our bodies, and you’ll leave with new tools to personalize your practice.

What is your COVID or illness policy?

I have a question you didn't answer here.

No problem! Email me or book a time on my calendar and I’d love to answer your question.

International Travel

I have travel insurance questions.

Travel insurance is now mandatory for my international retreats. I highly advise everyone to purchase a travel insurance plan that includes “cancel for any reason” coverage. You usually must buy this type of policy within 1-2 weeks of making your deposit for this trip, so do not delay.

While the coverage provided by travel insurance varies based on the policy you purchase, as a general rule, this type of insurance may provide coverage for a variety of losses which you may incur relating to a booking, including losses relating to trip cancellation, illness, injury, theft, lost or damaged property, etc.

Be aware that, except for the limited refund rights in the cancellation policy, you are 100% responsible for any losses, penalties, fees, or other financial consequences arising out of any booking or trip, or the cancellation or interruption of any booking or trip (including, by way of example, costs related to airline tickets and fees, passport fees, visa fees, medical expenses, etc.).

Check out this guide to travel insurance by WHOA Travel*, it does a good job of outlining the different things to look for in a plan. They also have links to some plans that have cancel for any reason insurance.

You may be able to purchase a plan like Allianz (I have used them many times, but never had to file a claim yet). Getting a quote through their website is easy, or you can call and talk to someone about what you want in a plan. Look at the terms closely for each plan and make sure you are comfortable with the reasons you are allowed to use the insurance.

You can also go to reddit and do some searching about travel insurance plans and “cancel for any reason” insurance, and see what the masses recommend (that’s what I do to research these type of things). Getting quotes from different travel insurance company websites is a simple process and quotes are free. If you need help picking a plan, email me.

*WHOA Travel is an amazing women-owned travel company that creates incredible adventures around the world. Going on one of their trips is a bucket list item for me! They also have a plus-size travel division.

What airport should I fly into?
Please fly into the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), San Jose, Costa Rica. Transfers to the first night’s hotel and our villa will be arranged from the airport only.
What time should I arrive and depart?
  • Transfers will be arranged from San Jose airport (SJO) only.
  • Arrival flights: by 3pm local time, February 2, 2026
  • Departure flights: after 2pm local time, February 9, 2026

Upon arrival, you will meet a prearranged hotel shuttle. Please plan to arrive by 3pm if possible, so you can have plenty of time to get to the hotel, relax, and join for a group dinner at 7pm. If you plan to join us for the dinner, please arrive no later than 5pm.

We leave for the villa promptly at 8am on February 3. The airport is 4 hours away from the villa.

Our departure shuttle back to the airport will be leaving the villa at 8am on February 9. I recommend an afternoon flight, departing after 2pm.

If you arrive or depart outside the stated hours above, you will be responsible for your own transportation, which is extremely expensive. A private taxi from the airport to our venue is $270 USD one way.

I'm nervous about traveling internationally.

Hey, I get it. Traveling internationally (especially solo) can be intimidating when you don’t know what to expect. Here’s some more information about how the experience will go.

Know that as the person responsible for the container of this retreat, I designed this experience with your safety in mind. I don’t want you to be confused about any step of the process, so please ask me if you have questions. I want your retreat experience to be smooth and stress-free.

I have a WhatsApp group that activates about a month before the retreat. We use this to meet one another, stay in touch about questions and updates, and especially for arrival and departure day. I also send updates throughout the week like a daily schedule with packing lists of what to bring to each activity.

I’ll email you ahead of the retreat with general info about international travel. Please check your passport expiration date now! Generally, your passport cannot expire within 6 months of your trip date.

Nervous about speaking Spanish? Most airport employees and retreat center staff speak English. I speak intermediate(ish)-level Spanish and frequently travel solo, I usually can translate or help communicate, if needs arise. And usually there are a few participants who speak Spanish as well!

Here’s a little more about what to expect:

You’ll fly into SJO, get your bags and go through customs.

As soon as you have your bag, you’ll message me on WhatsApp and I’ll dispatch the hotel shuttle to get you. They should pick you up within 20 minutes.

Our driver will be in a pre-arranged location and you’ll get on the shuttle with your bags. You may be with a few other retreat participants or alone depending what time your flight arrives.

You’ll meet me at the hotel (an American chain most of my guests will be familiar with) and we’ll get you checked in. We’ll meet for a group dinner nearby that evening.

The shuttle to the retreat center will pick us up for an 8am departure the next day. It’s a large bus that holds 30 people, so we will all ride together. It’s a 4 hour drive to the villa. We’ll stop halfway for snacks and you can use the ATM if you need.

Once we are at the villa, we don’t really leave, unless it’s on an excursion. It’s quite remote (literally in the jungle) and is only accessible with a 4×4 truck. We will be quite safe there, and will take their group transport and 4×4 trucks to the different excursions.

That being said, once we’re at the retreat center, we don’t really leave. If you wish to leave the retreat center other than the planned excursions and transfers, it will be at your own expense, and taxis are extremely expensive in this region.

On the return day, we’ll all board the shuttle at our villa and ride to the airport together. Follow the signage and go through security as with any American airport. Most airport staff speak English. When you land in your home country, you’ll go through customs again.

As long as you stay with the group, I think your trip to Costa Rica should be perfectly safe and without incident. Let me know if you have any specific concerns or questions about the process of international travel, and we can talk more!

Is it safe to travel to Costa Rica?

Yes, Costa Rica is generally safe for travelers who take basic precautions, just as you would in any city around the world.

Costa Rica is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors each year who enjoy its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and vibrant cities safely. Like any place, there are areas with higher crime rates, but we will be traveling to a remote jungle property in an area with very little crime. It’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuables, and take extra precaution if walking alone.

When we go on excursions, we’ll leave bags inside our locked transport or keep them on you at all times, so plan accordingly. I absolutely love the Booe waterproof crossbody bag for keeping my stuff with me at the beach or waterfall. And that’s not an affiliate link, I just genuinely like the product.

We’ll have a group orientation about safety particulars at our dinner in San Jose, but if you follow common-sense guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy a safe and memorable trip to Costa Rica.

How will I access medical care in Costa Rica if I need it?

What is the weather like in Costa Rica?

Situated in the southern Pacific region of Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula boasts a tropical climate, characterized by balmy temperatures and elevated humidity. To avoid the heat and the rainy season, we are visiting in February, when the weather is quite nice.

With average temperatures ranging from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C), the weather remains fairly consistent year-round. We are retreating in February, which is the dry season. Expect little to no rain, and beautiful blue skies.

The weather is dry and breezy, in February, with more comfortable temperatures. Please note that some rooms do not have AC. During the daytime, the non-AC rooms do get hot, but at night, they are quite cool. As you are usually not in your room during the day, this generally doesn’t pose a problem.

The sunrise consistently occurs around 5:15 am, while sunsets are approximately at 5:45 pm all year round. This pattern is due to our proximity, only about 1,000 kilometers from the equator.

Additionally, the lunar cycle significantly influences various natural phenomena on the Osa Peninsula, including tides and animal behaviors. The impact of the full moon on the peninsula is unmistakable.

Do I need to speak Spanish to go to this retreat?

Not really! Many of the people working in hospitality in Costa Rica speak English, but in any case, be creative! Smiles, gestures, por favor and gracias can get you far.

Most airport employees and retreat center staff speak English. I speak intermediate(ish)-level Spanish and frequently travel solo, I usually can translate or help communicate, if needs arise. And usually there are a few participants who speak Spanish as well!

I recommend learning a little bit of Spanish for travelers, it will make you more confident and make life easier for you if you end up spending time outside. the group. Plus, your world opens up when you interact with locals in their own language. Learning a little Spanish shows respect to the people whose home we are enjoying.

On a personal note: After my trip to Mexico in April 2024, I started learning and practicing Spanish using a combination of podcasts, online classes and videos, watching Netflix and listening to music, and travel. It’s been a goal of mine for years, but getting back into retreats made me take it seriously. It feels proper and respectful that I should learn Spanish if I am going to organize retreats in places like Mexico and Costa Rica.

I’m honestly amazed at how much spoken and written Spanish I understand now, after just about a year of practice, and I am getting better at communicating too. It’s opened up my world and is extremely rewarding. I’m having a lot of fun learning, pero necesito practicar mucho mas.

Do I need a passport or visa?

U.S. citizens will need a passport to visit Costa Rica, but no visa is required at this time for stays under 180 days. Passports will require at least one blank page for an entry stamp. You should check that your passport’s expiration date is not expiring within 6 months of your trip.

If you need a passport or to update your passport, I urge you to act immediately, especially if you are in the US. Wait times are long.

View US State Department info on Costa Rica.

Citizens of all other countries should check travel requirements well in advance of their retreat.

Is there WiFi? Will my phone work in Costa Rica?

There is WiFi available at our villa. Check with your cell phone provider about cell service in Costa Rica. You can purchase an add-on to your plan or an e-sim depending on your phone.

I communicate through WhatsApp so please contact your cell provider well in advance of getting to Costa Rica to ensure uninterrupted service and the ability to communicate when you arrive.

Do I need to get local currency?

This retreat is all-inclusive of accommodations, meals, and excursions, but you may want to have some local currency (Costa Rican Colón) on hand for things like souvenirs or booking a massage.

You also are invited to tip any of our villa’s staff or tour guides. Gratuities are not included in the retreat price, and are always appreciated but not required. You can tip in local currency, but generally, tips in USD will be accepted. I recommend setting aside $50-80 USD to tip our retreat staff.

I recommend avoiding the currency exchange at the airport (the rate is worse than what you’ll get at any other ATM). Our shuttle driver can stop at an ATM on the way from the airport to the villa. You can also use an ATM at the airport.
