Come catch your first waves in the colorful surf town of Sayulita. This retreat is for women in their 30s-60s (and beyond!) who want to experience the joy of surfing without the pressure. I’ve designed this as the most low-stakes, easy way to learn: we’ll break surfing down into simple, doable steps and cheer each other on as we catch our first waves.
When we’re not surfing, we’ll practice yoga, dance, eat incredible Mexican food, and have plenty of time to soak up the sun and Sayulita’s vibrant culture.

❤️ You want to learn to surf with other complete beginners in a positive, encouraging, fun, low-stakes way.
✌️ You’re a woman who wants to explore body acceptance through yoga, surfing, and community. (not a woman but want to attend? See the FAQ)
‼️ You’re a little bit daring, a little bit scared (my people!! ❤️) and you want to try something a little intimidating while being supported (by me & a small group of daring & caring women).
💞 You want to travel safely and conveniently in Mexico without having to figure out all the logistics.
🧘♀️ You want to practice yoga with a teacher that knows how to accommodate your unique body.
✨ You want to make some new like-minded and like-hearted friends with similar goals around body liberation and living life out loud.
🇲🇽 You’re ready to experience the vibrant culture, delicious food, and impeccable vibes of Mexico
🌊 You want to experience an adventure retreat designed especially for plus-size folks and other unconventional travelers.
🤓 You want an entire week packed with deep conversation, joyful movement, and laughter.
✈️ You’re an adventurous traveler who’s ready for your next passport stamp.
🌺 You want to have time away from the distractions and stress of everyday life to rest, relax, and rejuvenate, whether you come solo or with friends.
🌴 What To Expect
On your arrival day in Mexico, you’ll fly into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) and take a safe, private shuttle about 45 minutes to the colorful little surf town of Sayulita.
Once you arrive, I’ll welcome you to our home for the week: a dreamy boutique hotel property just a 5-minute walk to the beach and a short distance from everything in town. With two swimming pools, lush gardens, air-conditioned rooms, a breezy dining terrace, and our own open-air yoga studio, every detail is designed to invite rest, joy, and connection.
Our week together will be a blend of surfing, yoga, and laid-back fun. To prepare for our surf lesson, we’ll start with an ocean safety orientation, dry land skills class in the yoga studio, and a floating skills class with the surfboard. Then we’ll learn to surf together in Sayulita’s beginner-friendly waves, coached by my favorite local surfing instructors.
In addition to surfing, we’ll enjoy Body Positive Yoga classes, a yoga workshop including my signature Headstand Party event, and opportunities to consider and share how adventure, creativity, and play are healing our body image. Activities will be interwoven with downtime at the beach or pool and the chance to experience the vibrant culture of Mexico.
We’ll share breakfast each morning: a fresh, vegetarian buffet served daily at the hotel’s open-air terrace restaurant, with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. Most evenings, we’ll have group dinners out in town, exploring Sayulita’s incredible food scene together. You’ll also have one free night to enjoy dinner on your own. Lunches are open for you to explore: grab fresh juices or cacao, vegetarian options, or authentic Mexican food are all close by.
We’ll also soak up the town’s bohemian surf culture with opportunities to explore Sayulita’s shops, nightlife, and sunsets. And of course, there will be time each day to rest, relax, or just hang by the pool with new friends.
We’ll close out our experience together with an unforgettable silent disco dance party, my favorite way to celebrate community, joy, and all the stories we’ve re-written about our bodies during our week together.

✅ Check accessibility info & activity levels
I’ve always wanted to learn to surf, but for years I carried the belief that I didn’t have the right body for it – that I wasn’t athletic enough, strong enough, or coordinated enough. Surfing felt like something that was for other people.
But this retreat changed that story.
With each wave I paddled into, I discovered how capable I really am. The encouragement from everyone in the group and the surf instructors was so incredible, too. I found strength I didn’t know I had, not just physically but mentally. I let go of old limitations and replaced them with trust in my body, in the ocean, and in the process.
Surfing truly changed my life. I’m walking away from this experience with more confidence, more connection, and an eagerness to get back out there again.

🦋 Finally, Retreats Built for Bigger Bodies
Inclusive adventures that work for your body, not against it.
I have led over a dozen wellness retreats over the years, and I design my retreats specifically with fat and plus-size travelers in mind.
While this retreat is open to folks of all shapes and sizes who want to learn surfing, I center larger bodies in my work.
The tiniest details are important to me so you can have an excellent experience: seating that works for your body, equipment like surfboards being available in your size, and providing lots of information about accessibility and activities so you can self-select what works for you.
check out this highlight reel from Wild Bodies Mexico 2025!
When it comes to meeting accessibility needs, I’m not perfect, but I’m responsive as heck. I iterate every retreat based on feedback from my guests, and if there’s a problem that needs solving, I do my level best to solve it for you right away so that you can be comfortable.
At my retreats, I create a supportive environment where no one gets left behind, so you can safely push your limits in a group of other fun, positive folks without worrying about keeping up or fitting in.
Expect experiences where you can try something challenging (like surfing, doing a headstand, or exploring body image) in a supportive environment.
We’re gonna celebrate each other when we feel awkward and when we win. And we’ll have so much fun learning and practicing together. My face always hurts from laughing and smiling so much at these events. 😂

🌴 RETREAT SCHEDULE
DAY 1
Arrive in Sayulita
After your flight lands in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll meet our private driver for a 45-minute ride to the colorful surf town of Sayulita. When you arrive at our hotel, I’ll be there to greet you and help you get settled into your room.
The afternoon is yours: take a nap after your travels, dip into one of the two lovely hotel pools, wander down to the beach (5 minute walk), or simply relax.
In the evening, we’ll head into town for a group welcome dinner at one of my favorite local spots. We’ll share a delicious meal, meet your new retreat community, and open our week together with a short circle to set intentions. It’s the perfect way to kick off our adventure before turning in for a good night’s sleep.
DAY 2
Ocean Orientation & Dry Land Skills
Wake up and enjoy a fresh breakfast at our hotel before we set out to meet the ocean. You’ll get comfortable with the beach, learn important water safety skills, and start building confidence before we ever touch a surfboard.
Later in the day, we’ll gather in our yoga studio for a unique session that blends yoga with dry land surf skills. With a surfboard right in the studio, we’ll break down the basics like paddling, breathing, holding the board, and practicing your pop-up. This playful session will give you tools to take into the water and a head start on your first surf lesson.
As the sun sets, we’ll head into town. Sayulita comes alive at night with music, dancing, and colorful street performances. We’ll enjoy a group dinner together at one of my favorite local restaurants, and afterward you can join the fun exploring Sayulita’s nightlife or head back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep.
DAY 3
Floating Surf Skills & Intention Setting
After breakfast, we’ll head to the beach for the next surfing prep class: floating skills. Today you’ll take your board into the water, practice getting on and off the board, get comfortable lying on your belly, and experience the feel of floating in the ocean. It’s a low-pressure way to build familiarity and confidence before your first full surf lesson. Afterward, we’ll hang at the beach together.
In the afternoon, we’ll meet for a grounding yoga practice paired with a special intention-setting session. We’ll take time to get our mindset right, not only for tomorrow’s big surf lesson, but also for our upcoming photo shoot (yes, you’re going to look like a total surfing badass).
We’ll gather on the beach for a sunset sharing circle, then this evening is yours to explore. Dinner will be on your own tonight, grab some of my favorite cheap tacos, find a hidden cafe, or wander the colorful streets for souvenirs and live music.
DAY 4
Surfing Lesson & Sound Healing
After breakfast, it’s time for our surf lesson! With the support of our surf coaches, you’ll learn how to catch your first waves safely and confidently. A professional photographer will be right there with us, capturing all the action so you’ll have souvenirs of your first waves (and cute wipeouts). The vibe is playful, supportive, and low-pressure with space to laugh, be silly, and celebrate every single success as you pop up, ride, or splash right back into the water.
The afternoon is open for you to relax however you’d like: hang out on the beach, grab a fresh lunch in town, or take a well-earned nap. In the evening, we’ll gather for an early group dinner to share stories and highlights from our first surf session.
After dinner, we’ll head to the yoga studio for a deeply restorative sound healing and journaling reflection with Chel. During this sound healing, you’ll be immersed in sound from crystal and metal bowls, chimes, drums, and percussion instruments. Sometimes the bowls are even played directly on your body, sending healing vibrations through every layer of your being. It’s the perfect way to integrate the day’s energy and drift into deep rest.
DAY 5
Surfing Photo Shoot & Headstand Party
Before breakfast, we’ll gather on the beach for a short meditation to center ourselves and enjoy the sunrise. Then it’s time for our professional surfing photo shoot! We’ll take a group photo plus individual posed shots with your surfboard, an unforgettable keepsake from your week in Sayulita and a reminder that yes, you really did this.
Afterward, we’ll enjoy breakfast together on the hotel’s open-air terrace before moving into a yoga workshop designed to help you personalize the practice for your unique body. Bring your questions or anything you want to troubleshoot, and I’ll share practical tools to make the practice your own.
We’ll close with one of my signature events: Headstand Party. If you’ve ever wanted to try going upside down but never had a teacher to support you, this is your chance. Expect laughter, cheering, and celebration as we flip the script on what these bodies are supposed to do. That evening, we’ll gather once again for a group dinner at one of my favorite local restaurants.
DAY 6
More Surfing & Dance Party
After breakfast, it’s your chance to take an optional second surf lesson, where you’ll catch more waves, refine your skills, and build on all your experiences so far. You’re also welcome to simply hang out on the beach and watch your friends ride the waves, or take the morning for yourself.
Enjoy the final day in Sayulita with your new BFFs before an early group dinner together. Afterward, the celebration kicks into full gear: an unforgettable closing circle complete with music, our silent disco dance party, and a few surprises you won’t want to miss.
DAY 7
Goodbye (Until Next Year)
On our last morning together, we’ll have an early yoga practice and breakfast before we say our goodbyes & see ya laters. Private transportation will bring us back to Puerto Vallarta airport for a safe flight home.
The retreat had a great balance between group activities and down time. Plus, a built in community to explore. You are really good at breaking down big and scary things to be digestible and eased a lot of anxiety I had about trying something new. I went from mildly afraid to more curious and excited.

You must buy this type of policy within two weeks of making your deposit for this trip, so do not delay. Read more about travel insurance in the FAQ.
Travel insurance is a minor cost to add protection to your significant investment in this trip. It will protect your investment in case the trip has to cancel for any reason, or if you are unable to attend for a variety of reasons.
Schedule Changes
International travel and group travel built with accessibility in mind require flexibility and a positive mental attitude. Activities, excursions, and itinerary may change at any time, depending on availability, weather, and what I determine is most appropriate for the group’s wellbeing. I adapt the itinerary to the group, and design the event around the person or people who need the most support, so everyone can be included.

The retreat was SO FUN! It allowed me to try surfing, which I’ve been wanting to try for a long time in a safe and supportive container that made it feel less risky than booking a surf lesson on my own.
Growing up, my family held the belief “we are not athletic.” No one in my family is interested in sports or physical fitness in any way. From realizing that I love surfing, conversations with other retreat participants, and in our sharing circles, I was able to unlearn that old story and replace it with the belief that I am athletic, I am strong, I want to do athletic activities with my body, and all of that is okay.

About Your Host
Amber Karnes
I’m Amber Karnes (she/her). I’m a multi-disciplinary artist, community builder, educator, and yoga teacher.
I am a curious, multi-passionate person and a connector. Over the past 25 years I have built communities and thrown events around yoga, art, craft, graphic design, food justice, the hardcore punk music scene, bikelife, entrepreneurship, and more.
My adventure travel retreats are really something special. I hosted my first yoga retreat (Body Positive Yoga Summer Camp) in 2015, and discovered that creating and hosting week-long, small group wellness retreats are my favorite way to work in the whole world. I have since hosted 15 sold out retreats in Virginia, California, and Mexico.
At my events, we have learned to surf, jumped off cliffs into cenotes and rivers, snorkeled with sea turtles, made tortillas with Mayan villagers, had dance parties under the full moon, stood in the Atlantic Ocean watching a total solar eclipse, and made original art collages inspired by our encounters with manatees, whale sharks, and stingrays.
Yoga & body acceptance
When I found yoga in my early 20s, it started a decades-long journey of learning how to live well in this unruly body of mine.
You can read a short summary of my long journey with body acceptance here.
Eventually I became a yoga teacher and the past 14 years I’ve been building community (and a business) around yoga. I am the creator of Body Positive Yoga, which is both a teaching method and a community about body liberation and accessibility.
I’ve created a bunch of stuff in yoga-land, including the Accessible Yoga School, Yoga for All Training, and many workshops and intensives on body acceptance through the lens of the yoga teachings.
I write and teach about body acceptance and how you can use your yoga practice to come home to your body and feel more comfortable in your skin.
I’m also interested in exploring how creativity, play, and adventure play a role in healing our body image. I love facilitating conversations about why we feel the way we do about our bodies and how we can have a healthy relationship with our appearance.
My newest yoga offering is an online yoga clubhouse called amberhouse. I hope you’ll join me for a class sometime!
In my work, I also support small business owners around marketing strategy, especially marketing without social media.
I started surfing in 2024 in Sayulita, which was the inspiration for this retreat. Read all about why I created this retreat
Next, I’m excited to introduce you to Chel, one of my longest-standing friends! Learn more about her, what she’ll offer at the retreat, and our friendship below.
Amber & Chel
20 Years of Friendship & Peer Mentorship
This retreat never would have happened without my friend Chel!
Chel Rogerson is the founder of Sayulita’s Evoka Yoga School, a reiki practitioner, and wellness coach.
Chel and I have been friends for 20 years! We met long ago working as marketing contractors for a Fortune 500 company. We have collaborated many times since we ditched corporate life and started our own wellness businesses.
Chel co-hosted a Body Positive Yoga Retreat with me in the Outer Banks in 2017. We also collaborated on the first two surfing & yoga retreats in 2025, and she’s my co-host for Wild Bodies Costa Rica in February.
She encouraged me to try surfing, too. I went surfing five times on that trip to Sayulita and the vision for this retreat came to me as sat on my surfboard, watching the waves. It came to me as I wandered the streets of Sayulita and got to know its rhythm.
After that trip, I kicked myself into high gear. I came home and uprooted my life, moved in with my parents, started taking excellent care of my body and mind, and created 2 sold out Mexico Surfing & Yoga Retreats, which rekindled my love for yoga teaching and leading retreats. The first Wild Bodies Mexico retreat and amberhouse yoga club followed soon after. I feel like I am back and so excited about the new work I am creating.
I’ll be forever grateful for Chel’s many influences on my life, and our countless conversations about yoga, body image, feminism, spirituality, business, and life.
Come hang out with us in Sayulita and feel the energy of our strength in collaboration, which is such a vibe.
In April 2024, I visited Chel in Sayulita, Mexico, feeling uninspired, depressed, and stuck. My whole life had come apart: I was freshly divorced after a 20-year relationship and processing the serious ramifications that the pandemic had on my life, work, and relationships. I had lost trust and faith in myself.
Chel really brought me back to life on that trip as she shared her life with me for a week: one that was grounded in nature, yoga, peace, and healing. Suddenly, I could imagine a different life for myself. I felt inspired for the first time in a long time.
Chel Rogerson
Guest Teacher & Healer
Chel Rogerson is a former corporate marketing executive turned yoga teacher, surfer, and Reiki Master who decided to escape the grind and start a purpose-led life in tropical Mexico.
She met Amber 20 years ago when they were working together for a Fortune 500 company, before they became yoga teachers!
Chel once had stifling body image and self-confidence issues. After moving through some heavy life challenges, she walked into yoga and dance classes for the first time approaching 30 and instantly found freedom and joy in movement.
She began to explore healing through dance, yoga, and circus arts. Years of this journey finally helped her overcome her fear of wearing shorts, leggings, or (gasp!) a bikini — changing the trajectory of her life. She started to perform pole dance and hula hoop and travel the world surfing.
Since becoming a yoga teacher in 2013, Chel has offered yoga classes, mindfulness meditation, yoga nidra and energy healing. She is the founder of EVOKA | Sayulita Yoga School offering 200-hour yoga teacher trainings in Mexico.
Chel lives in Sayulita, Mexico, often visiting back to her home in Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Retreat Activity Level: 4/5
Activities: Surfing, walking, ocean swimming, yoga, dance
Accessibility Information About The Hotel
Help is available getting your luggage to your room or whatever assistance you may need. The hotel staff is excellent and will be there to assist us all week.
The hotel has 3 floors. There is no elevator in the hotel. Rooms are available on the ground floor, second floor (1 flight of stairs or approx. 16-18 stairs), or third floor (2 flights of stairs).
The dining terrace is on the third floor. The yoga studio is on the rooftop, up an additional half-flight of 8 stairs.
The pools and massage rooms are on the ground floor.
If you need more specific information about any of the rooms or the hotel, please let me know.
Physical Activities
Walking: Expect lots of walking. Walking is the main form of transportation in Sayulita. Our hotel is on the north side, which is a 5-minute walk from the north side beach and about a 10-15 minute walk to the main part of town.
There are 5-6 restaurants or coffee shops within a 5-minute walk of the hotel. For a 10-15 minute walk, you reach the main area of town and have countless restaurants and convenience stores available.
The advantage of staying on the north side is we are far away from the hustle & bustle of Sayulita’s nightlife noise, in a mostly residential area.
I’m not gonna lie, there’s the potential for a lot of walking on this retreat. However, I am renting a golf cart for the week, which will be driven by my assistant and serve as a taxi for anyone who needs a little extra support getting to and from activities and meals. You’ll be able to reach out via WhatsApp and ask for a ride when you need it.
You may decide you want to share a golf cart with a few friends and have your own private taxi whenever you want it. Golf carts are available for rental in Sayulita, and cost around $1000-1500 pesos ($50-75 USD) per day.
You’ll be walking to and from town to get snacks, meals, go to the beach, and for our group dinners. You will definitely get many steps per day, and it’s important to make sure you stay hydrated, avoid the heat of the day, and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. The streets are uneven terrain with concrete, dirt, gravel, with uneven curbs that may end suddenly.
Ocean swimming: Sayulita’s south end is the calmest (where we’ll be surfing), with waves depending on the wind, tides, and other constantly changing conditions. Sayulita is a very friendly beach with manageable waves and a sandy bottom. Waves get bigger as you go toward the north side of town.
Surfing: Surfing is an extremely demanding sport that will wear you out fast, even though you’re having fun! It involves carrying a board out into the water (sandy bottom, small waves), getting on the board, floating and balancing on your belly, paddling, and riding the board in to the beach. Then you return and do it all again. The surf lessons will last about 90 minutes, and there will be time to take breaks between catching waves.
Yoga classes: Amber specializes in accessible, body positive yoga. Variations will be offered for all mobility levels. Yoga props are provided, including mats, blocks, blankets, straps, folding chairs
Dance party: dance with us or sit and enjoy the atmosphere
Hotel Seating Options
Photos of chairs, bathrooms, staircases, and more are available upon request.
Seating in rooms: varies by room but includes wooden and leather chairs of various heights with and without arms.
Dining area: wooden and wicker chairs without arms
Pool area: pool loungers without arms, benches without arms
Gathering space outside yoga studio: couches
Food & Dietary Needs
Meals included in this retreat:
- Breakfast buffet every morning at our hotel
- Dinners out at restaurants in town (except 1 night out on your own)
All lunches and snacks, you will get yourself, dining out in town. Catering group meals at the hotel is quite expensive, so I structured it this way to keep costs down.
I also wanted to give you the chance to experience the amazing Mexican food and culture of Sayulita by eating in its many local restaurants.
There are small markets that carry basic grocery items and convenience stores like Oxxo where you can get snacks. There is no large supermarket or WalMart-type store in Sayulita.
At our hotel, coffee is served starting at 8am each morning, and breakfast is served buffet style 8:30-11:30am. The buffet typically includes fruit, yogurt, beans, soy dishes, eggs, protein options, sauteed mushrooms, chilaquiles, vegan eggs, pancakes, gluten-free and non- gluten-free granola, and fruit flavored water (agua fresca). The menu changes everyday and everything has a label with the dish description.
The food in Sayulita is fresh, affordable, and lovingly prepared. I have never had a bad meal in this town! I ate almost exclusively vegetarian when I was there, many restaurants have good vegan and gluten-free options.
I’ll be sending out a retreat guidebook before our trip which has a list of many local restaurant options.
Important: Do not drink the tap water or use it to brush your teeth. Purified water is available in many dispensers around the hotel. Bottled water is available for purchase at just about any market in town. Ice served around town is purified.
Alcohol & Drug Policy
Alcohol Policy
Alcohol is not included in the retreat cost.
There will be alcohol available at many bars or restaurants in town. If you choose to drink, I ask that you please do so responsibly and respectfully. I encourage us all to keep in mind that we are in another culture, being invited to stay on their land while we enjoy ourselves. Please keep the energy of being in community with one another at a yoga hotel (which is a different vibe from drinking on vacation at a beach resort).
Drug Policy
I ask that everyone refrain from consuming recreational drugs while attending this retreat.
Smoking
Smoking is only allowed in designated areas outside the hotel. Smoking is never allowed inside rooms.
Accessing Medical Care
There is an in-town urgent care and traditional clinic that also offers wellness IVs. I got treatment for an ear infection here and it was a great experience. The staff spoke English.
Local pharmacies (farmacias) are everywhere and have very reasonable prices on common over-the-counter medications, plus many drugs you usually need a prescription for in the USA.
There are hospitals in Punta Mita (25 minutes) and Puerto Vallarta (45 minutes).
In the case of an accident, injury, illness, theft, or other incidents, you must immediately notify me and a hotel staff member. Emergency procedures are in place at the hotel to assist us. However, they cannot guarantee necessary medical attention or treatment.
I recommend that your mandatory travel insurance policy covers medical care and transport in Mexico should you need it. Read more about travel insurance in the FAQ.
COVID & Illness Policy
Participation in any group activity carries a risk of getting sick, especially when people travel to the event. Getting sick at an event, or worse, passing an illness around an event is a huge bummer, but it does happen.
In our post-pandemic world (in which Covid is still very much alive and well) it’s important to have a plan, as all of us have different risk profiles and practices around staying well.
Obviously we want to avoid any illness, but I treat Covid differently because it is an extremely contagious virus, and also extremely common to pass around at events. I also have many guests with compromised immune systems, and with our remote location, accessing medical care will not be simple, so I want to do my best to keep our community safe.
Retreat Agreements
To care for the group and yourself, I’m asking everyone attending this retreat to agree to the following:
- All retreat participants must test negative for Covid before they leave their home airport for the trip.
- Please wear a mask in the airport and on the plane. It’s extremely common for someone to get sick while traveling to an event, then pass the illness around at the event. Please mask during your travels to protect your investment in this trip and the health of your fellow community members and hotel staff that you’ll be living with for the week (and their families).
- If you feel ill at the retreat, please let me know right away. We can make sure you get meals in your room or whatever support you need.
- I will have Covid tests available at the hotel. If you feel ill, I will ask you to test for Covid.
- If you test positive for Covid during the retreat, you will need to isolate. This is a huge disappointment to happen at a retreat, when you’ve anticipated the event so much, so please wear a mask on the plane and in the airport for your best chance at arriving and staying healthy!
- I ask that if you test negative for Covid but are still feeling ill, especially if you run a fever, that you isolate and rest until you feel well. If you need to be near the group for any reason, I will have masks available.
If you want to see the entire retreat agreement contract before you register, please email me.
Travel Insurance & Illness
You should promtply purchase the mandatory travel insurance so that you can get “cancel for any reason” insurance which may cover your investment in the case you get sick before or during the retreat.
You may also elect to purchase a travel insurance plan that covers medical care or medical transport in Mexico. I recommend it, as travel insurance is quite affordable compared to what you are spending on this trip.
reviews of my retreats
I attended every single retreat she offered one year
Amber Karnes is someone I’ve had the pleasure of learning yoga from, attending retreats and collaborating with as a wellness practitioner. One of the things that’s been a pleasure throughout all of my experiences is the thoughtfulness and impact of her work.
She is always there in her students minds or in the retreat participants hearts, creating an unforgettable and transformative experience that is centered around personal and collective empowerment. And working with her is FUN. She’s driven, creative and is a powerhouse of taking a project from idea to completion.
There’s a reason why I attended every single retreat she offered one year, trust.

Usually at the end of a trip, I dread going back home, or I’m desperate to go home. But today, I have this overwhelming feeling of peace and gratitude. I’m inspired to go back to the life that I get to have, and I’m feeling really motivated.
I was just expecting to have a really fun experience with other cool women, but this was more than I bargained for in a huge way. I get to go back with this whole different version of me; I’ve shed a couple layers and grown a couple of skins.
This retreat is the best gift you can give to yourself because it is truly an investment in your body and nervous system. I will carry so much of what I learned about myself into my real life. And if you already know yourself plenty—you’ll certainly gain some new friends!

The art was hugely impactful and well considered. The dance party was amazing and so much more than I thought it might be!

This retreat allowed me to make connections with people who view the world in a similar way that I do, but also allowed me to see the world through new eyes. Retreats like these create spaces where people are free to share their experiences in a non-judgmental space which is both enlightening and healing.
I loved the balance of activities and downtime, it was nice to feel like there was enough time to recharge between activities. I feel like I got more out of them this way. Everyone was so accommodating, it was lovely to feel so cared for.

I particularly enjoyed the group discussions on body image + collage making that followed. Having discussion + prompts and something to create immediately were invaluable to me and something I will carry with me IRL!

a manatee & cenote tattoo one participant got while in Mexico to commemorate the experience!

Amber, you are amazing at building community and inclusion. This trip exceeded my expectations! I had so much fun that I didn’t want to leave. I felt like I made friends and made meaningful connections.
I feel more confident after this retreat. Both in skin and spirit. I feel like I am allowed to enjoy life and need to do it more often. And really learned a lot about myself and honoring my energy levels. I felt included and a sense of belonging. I belong.

Not only is the focus of the retreat on diving deep into our bravest and most incredible selves, but also the gift of having a week of being cared for – emotionally, physically, by a community with shared experience – is transformative and restful in a way that is so rare.

The feeling of being in community and finding safety to explore the challenges of Wild Bodies has been life-changing, soul searching, and like coming up from the depths in a splash of fun and discovery to the surface of my life.

Thank you for putting these retreats together. You attract the most wonderful people. We get to meet each other and do fun stuff while you facilitate this experience for everyone.
This is my second retreat, and both of them have been amazing. Thank you for being you and for making this experience possible for all of us.

I felt cared for, listened to and seen. Thank you for all your care and attention to the details. I appreciate the way you have such high standards.
I didn’t think my second retreat could be better than my first. I have grown so much using my experience from my first retreat to the this second one. I maintained friendships, made new ones, deepened my connection with myself, others, and with my practice.
It has taught me how to use what I feel on my mat and share it with the world. Most of all it has given me a place to calm my mind, feel confident, and be more authentic with myself. Loved every minute!
I’d recommend this retreat to a friend because it was such a nourishing experience – I felt my body and soul get stronger, I felt my intentions take a more meaningful shape, I felt refueled. Plus, all the lovely people there are so supportive and made me feel like I had found a new community.
Amber is very good at pulling people out of their shell. I learned so much, but I also felt so comfortable in her environment and she made modifications for my back problem. She’s very good at reaching people where they are and a joy to learn from.
I attended a Body Positive Yoga retreat with Amber and it was life-changing, life-affirming, actually!
Amber’s care, compassion, commitment, and drive is what still has me doing yoga and still working on me and my overall health (body, mind, and spirit). She gave me the tools I needed to move forward on my health and self love journey.
I was pretty skeptical about what to expect, despite having signed up on a last minute whim. I deal with social anxiety and struggle to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to meeting new people. This was a great opportunity to challenge my own insecurities and do so in a supportive environment with other women who face the same internal conflicts.
Being in a community of intelligent, authentic and like minded, yet diverse women is exceptionally empowering.
To know there are others out there that you can identify with, learn from, and share community with is so impactful and can be carried with you in everyday life wherever you go.
How powerful community can be. It was so wonderful being around women who were committed (even at different levels) to achieving body peace.
I love looking at our bodies together and witnessing the power that we hold to heal ourselves and each other.
I think what Amber does is so important in holding space for us to find one another and lead us through example, wisdom, kindness, and humor.
Community building is a special skill that, with Amber, comes from her heart and a passion for the ways we can see and be seen in the world with compassion.
My Body Positive Yoga class with Amber was the real but very needed compassionate check-in toward living in a body that’s different. She gifted me her focused attention, thoughtful words, and movement to love myself wholly.

Travel Insurance

Tell me about the food!
Meals included in this retreat:
- Breakfast buffet every morning at our hotel
- Group dinners out at restaurants in town (except 1 night out on your own)
- A few snacks (surf lesson, sharing circles)
Not included:
- Lunches or midday meals
- Other snacks
- One dinner
- Alcohol
Catering group meals at the hotel is quite expensive, so I structured it this way to keep costs down. I also wanted to give you the chance to experience the amazing Mexican food and culture of Sayulita by eating in its many local restaurants.
There are small markets around town that carry basic grocery items and convenience stores like Oxxo where you can get snacks. There is no large supermarket or WalMart-type store in Sayulita. Your shuttle driver can stop on a grocery store on the way in (I recommend this).
I’ll be sending out a retreat guidebook before our trip which has a list of many local restaurants that are good.
Check out YouTube for more info on Sayulita’s food scene and pick up my friend Chel’s Sayulita guidebook here.
Important: Do not drink the tap water or use it to brush your teeth. Purified water is available in many dispensers around the hotel. Bottled water is available for purchase at just about any market in town. Ice served around town is purified.
There is no ice machine in the hotel. Ice may be purchased from local convenience stores.
If I book a shared room, can you find me a roommate?
Yes! If you book into a shared room and are coming alone, we will pair you with another retreat participant who’s requesting the same room type.
You’re also welcome to book shared accommodations with a friend. Let me know you’re booking together when you register.
I have questions about accessibility or activity levels.
Great! I have a whole section about that right here.
What is the alcohol and drug policy?
I have a question you didn't answer here.
No problem! Email me or book a time on my calendar and I’d love to answer your question.
About the Experience
Will I really be able to surf?
Yes you will surf. As a beginner surfer myself, I’ve noticed that surfing is made up of 2 main things: catching waves and all the other stuff.
Catching waves looks like:
- Riding the waves mermaid style on your belly
- Cruising into shore riding the board on your knees or in a kneeling lunge position
- Standing on the board for a second and falling off
- Standing on the board for a few seconds at a time (then, falling off)
- Falling off at any time for no reason when you thought you “did it right”
- Getting tumbled around by the waves after you fall off, pretty much every time 😂
- And so on – expect LOTS of cute wipeouts
But catching waves is a small part of surfing. Surfing also looks like all this stuff:
- Putting on your rash guard and sunscreen
- Carrying your board to the beach
- Warming up your body with some stretches and movements
- Practicing your pop-up
- Walking or paddling your board out to where we catch waves
- Learning to paddle your board
- Learning how to navigate waves while on your board
- Learning to balance on your board on your belly
- Learning to sit on your board
- Learning to read waves
- Learning where not to be when a wave comes in
- Sitting on your board watching for waves
- Carrying your board back up the beach
- Digging sand out of every crevice 😂
Surfing is a fun, challenging, complicated activity. You may be wondering, “Will I stand up on the surfboard and catch a wave?”
Many, many people do stand up during their first lesson. There’s no guarantees in life (especially in the ocean, with constantly changing conditions), but to manage your expectations:
I took my first surf lesson at age 42 in Sayulita. I stood up on the board 4 times during my very first surf lesson (for like 1 second at a time). I would estimate that in my first week of surfing, with about 100 attempts to catch waves, I stood up 6 times. Your mileage may vary.
But standing is not the only part of surfing. Everyone that attempts surfing will catch a wave. Some of us will go in on our bellies (it’s so fun this way, you look cute, feel like a mermaid, and everyone’s butt looks good in this position 😂), some of us will catch waves on our knees or a kneeling lunge position, some of us will stand up for a few waves.
I’m hiring a photographer to capture pictures of our surf lesson and a posed shoot of you with the surfboard. You’ll get professional photographs to remember your experience. I can’t wait to share your first surfing lesson with you!
If you want to take more than one surf lesson, I’ll connect you with our instructors so you can arrange it while we’re in town. They can take you to other beaches in the area, too.
I'm nervous about being able to keep up with the group during activities.
I design my retreats in such a way that we move at the pace of the person who needs the most time and assistance.
No one is ever made to feel “too slow.”
As the person responsible for holding the container of the retreat group, I set the pace for activities and I intentionally lead “from the back of the pack” according to how the group is doing.
Even the most athletic people have bad days, get too hot in the sun, or get their period. So I am always evaluating the group in front of me and making sure that no one is left behind, whether we are doing yoga, walking to dinner, or on an excursion.
If you still have questions about whether this particular retreat is appropriate for you, email me or book a time on my calendar. I’d love to chat with you and make sure I answer all your concerns.
Am I too old to come to the retreat?
You’d be amazed at how many women have this question! The other question is, “Will I be the oldest one there?”
Most of my retreat guests are in their early 30s to early 60s, and I deeply appreciate inter-generational retreats. It adds layers of perspective and wisdom that benefit the collective.
As one younger retreat participant said of some of my older guests, “I was able to see the wisdom that aging can bring. It was incredibly beautiful to see people, older than I am, loving and caring for their bodies the way that is mindful and intentional. It helped open my eyes to the fact that life, at any age, is what you make of it.”
You are not too old! I hope to see you there.
Will I be able to do the yoga classes?
The yoga that I practice is not designed to be a strenuous workout. These are easy movements and big deep breaths that meet your body where you are today. Lots of options and modifications will be offered for any practice I lead.
We will workshop and troubleshoot poses or transitions that don’t work for our bodies, and you’ll leave with new tools to personalize your practice.
Do most retreat participants come alone?
Yes, many of my guests do come alone. But by the end of their stay they usually have made some great new friends. I’ve heard from folks who retreated with me a decade ago that are still friends with each other today!
How big is the group?
This group will be a maximum of 12 participants.
Is this retreat for women only?
This retreat is for women and gender minorities. It is not a space for cisgender men.
Let me try my best to be clear. Women (and people of other gender identities who grew up socialized as women) share certain lived experiences in our patriarchal culture. We receive implicit and explicit messages about “our place in things” that men don’t. We’ll be untangling the ways that cultural conditioning about womanhood overlaps with our sense of self, especially with regards to body image.
This retreat is a space for women as well as anyone who was raised or socialized as a woman. Trans women are welcome, as well as transmasc and non-binary folks who were socialized as women (regardless of how they currently identify). It is not a space for cisgender men.
If you have questions about whether you should attend, please contact me and we can discuss!
What is your COVID or illness policy?

Travel Insurance & Illness
You should promtply purchase the mandatory travel insurance so that you can get “cancel for any reason” insurance which may cover your investment in the case you get sick before or during the retreat.
You may also elect to purchase a travel insurance plan that covers medical care or medical transport in Mexico. I recommend it, as travel insurance is quite affordable compared to what you are spending on this trip.
What do I need to bring?
I’ll send you a complete packing list before the retreat, but you don’t need any complicated or fancy items. Everywhere we go will be extremely casual.
I’ll be bringing comfortable, casual clothing, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sun shirt), a couple bathing suits, cover-ups for the beach and pool, loungewear, comfortable walking shoes, water shoes, yoga clothing, and stuff like sunscreen and bug repellant.
You may want things like a personal fan or special snacks, but we’ll get into those details closer to the retreat.
Provided by the hotel:
- Pool towels (onsite use)
- Yoga mats
- Shampoo & conditioner
- Hair dryers in each room
- Clean drinking water
- Wi-Fi throughout the property
- First Aid kit
I already know how to surf, can I still come?
Awesome, please come to the retreat! If you vibe with what I’m offering here, you are welcome.
- If you came to this retreat last year, you’ll build on the skills you already learned and you can show the new folks how things go
- If you’ve been surfing for a while, come share your knowledge with us! As long as your mindset is friendly toward beginners and encouraging toward new surfers, you are welcome at this retreat!
I have a question you didn't answer here.
No problem! Email me or book a time on my calendar and I’d love to answer your question.
International Travel
I have travel insurance questions.
Travel insurance is now mandatory for my international retreats. I highly advise everyone to purchase a travel insurance plan that includes “cancel for any reason” coverage. You usually must buy this type of policy within 1-2 weeks of making your deposit for this trip, so do not delay.
While the coverage provided by travel insurance varies based on the policy you purchase, as a general rule, this type of insurance may provide coverage for a variety of losses which you may incur relating to a booking, including losses relating to trip cancellation, illness, injury, theft, lost or damaged property, etc.
Be aware that, except for the limited refund rights in the cancellation policy, you are 100% responsible for any losses, penalties, fees, or other financial consequences arising out of any booking or trip, or the cancellation or interruption of any booking or trip (including, by way of example, costs related to airline tickets and fees, passport fees, visa fees, medical expenses, etc.).
Your credit card may have insurance that covers your purchase, so check with them first. This type of coverage also satisfies my mandatory travel insurance requirement.
Check out this guide to travel insurance by WHOA Travel*, it does a good job of outlining the different things to look for in a plan. They also have links to some plans that have cancel for any reason insurance.
You may be able to purchase a plan like Allianz (I have used them many times, but never had to file a claim yet). Getting a quote through their website is easy, or you can call and talk to someone about what you want in a plan. Look at the terms closely for each plan and make sure you are comfortable with the reasons you are allowed to use the insurance.
You can also go to reddit and do some searching about travel insurance plans and “cancel for any reason” insurance, and see what the masses recommend (that’s what I do to research these type of things). Getting quotes from different travel insurance company websites is a simple process and quotes are free. If you need help picking a plan, email me.
*WHOA Travel is an amazing women-owned travel company that creates incredible adventures around the world. Going on one of their trips is a bucket list item for me! They also have a plus-size travel division.
What airport should I fly into?
Please fly into the Puerto Vallarta International Airport | Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), Puerto Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico.
Transfers to the hotel will be arranged from the airport only.
What time should I arrive and depart?
In order to take advantage of transfers to our hotel, please note: arrival transfers will only be offered for flights arriving between 12pm and 5pm on arrival day and flights departing between 10am and 4pm on the departure date.
On departure day, plan on leaving the hotel 3 hours before your flight is scheduled to depart (ex: 7am for a 10am flight).
I recommend booking:
- Flights arriving before 4pm on arrival day
- Flights departing after 12pm on departure day
If you arrive or depart outside the stated hours above, you will be responsible for your own transportation, which is expensive. A private taxi from the airport to our venue is $80 USD one way.
I'm nervous about traveling internationally.
Hey, I get it. Traveling internationally (especially solo) can be intimidating when you don’t know what to expect. Here’s some more information about how the experience will go.
Know that as the person responsible for the container of this retreat, I designed this experience with your safety in mind. I don’t want you to be confused about any step of the process, so please ask me if you have questions. I want your retreat experience to be smooth and stress-free.
I have a WhatsApp group that activates about a month before the retreat. We use this to meet one another, stay in touch about questions and updates, and especially for arrival and departure day. I also send updates throughout the week like a daily schedule with packing lists of what to bring to each activity.
I’ll email you ahead of the retreat with general info about international travel. Please check your passport expiration date now! Generally, your passport cannot expire within 6 months of your trip date.
Nervous about speaking Spanish? Most airport employees and retreat center staff speak English. I speak intermediate(ish)-level Spanish and frequently travel solo, I usually can translate or help communicate, if needs arise. And usually there are a few participants who speak Spanish as well!
Here’s a little more about what to expect:
You’ll fly into Puerto Vallarta airport, get your bags and go through customs.
As soon as you have your bag, you’ll message me on WhatsApp and I’ll alert the driver. Our driver will be in a pre-arranged location with a sign and you’ll get on the shuttle with your bags. If you’re a little early for the shuttle, you’ll meet a few other retreat participants at the bar outside the airport. You’ll probably be on the shuttle with 2-3 other participants.
You’ll ride 45 minutes to Sayulita and meet me at the hotel. Your driver can stop at a local supermarket so you can purchase some favorite snacks or any supplies you forgot. When you arrive, we’ll get you checked in to your room and meet that evening for a group dinner at a nearby restaurant.
I’ll brief everyone on what they need to know to stay safe while we are in town. Sayulita is a small, tourist-friendly town with plenty of international travelers. If you use basic precautions, your trip should be without incident!
Check out the day-by-day itinerary for complete details of what we’re doing at the retreat.
On our departure day, you’ll leave in a private shuttle with 2-3 other retreat participants and ride back to the airport. Follow the signage and go through security as with any airport. Most airport staff speak English. When you land at home, you’ll go through customs again.
Let me know if you have any specific concerns or questions about the process of international travel, and we can talk more!
Is it safe to travel to Mexico?
Yes, Mexico is generally safe for travelers who take basic precautions, the same type of precautions one would take in any large city around the world.
Mexico is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors each year who enjoy its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and vibrant cities safely. Like any place, there are areas with higher crime rates, but Sayulita is a small town with very little crime. It’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuables, and take extra precaution if walking alone at night.
That being said, I have ridden many public buses in this part of Mexico and walked alone at night many times in Sayulita and never felt unsafe. I honestly felt much safer in Sayulita than I have in many places in the U.S. where I have lived.
I’m arranging trusted transportation services from the airport and we’ll have a group orientation about safety when you arrive, but if you follow common-sense guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy a safe and memorable trip to Mexico.
How will I access medical care in Mexico if I need it?
What is the weather like in Mexico?
Situated on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Sayulita experiences warm and tropical weather throughout the year.
The month of May is warmer with temperatures ranging from 73°F (23°C) to 91°F (33°C). You can expect plenty of sunshine and lower humidity than later in the month, which is the start of rainy season.
Do I need to speak Spanish to go to this retreat?
Not really! Many of the people working in hospitality in Mexico speak English, but in any case, be creative! Smiles, gestures, por favor and gracias can get you far.
Most airport employees and retreat center staff speak English. I speak intermediate(ish)-level Spanish and frequently travel solo, I usually can translate or help communicate, if needs arise. And usually there are a few participants who speak Spanish as well!
I recommend learning a little bit of Spanish for travelers, it will make you more confident and make life easier for you if you end up spending time outside. the group. Plus, your world opens up when you interact with locals in their own language. Learning a little Spanish shows respect to the people whose home we are enjoying.
On a personal note: After my trip to Sayulita in April 2024, I started learning and practicing Spanish using a combination of podcasts, online classes and videos, watching Netflix and listening to music, and travel. It’s been a goal of mine for years, but getting back into retreats made me take it seriously. It feels proper and respectful that I should learn Spanish if I am going to organize retreats in places like Mexico and Costa Rica.
I’m honestly amazed at how much spoken and written Spanish I understand now, after just about a year of practice, and I am getting better at communicating too. It’s opened up my world and is extremely rewarding. I’m having a lot of fun learning, pero necesito practicar mucho mas.
Do I need a passport or visa?
U.S. citizens will need a passport to visit Mexico, but no visa is required at this time for stays under 180 days. Passports will require at least one blank page for an entry stamp. You should check that your passport’s expiration date is not expiring within 6 months of your trip.
If you need a passport or to update your passport, I urge you to act immediately, especially if you are in the US. Wait times are long.
Citizens of all other countries should check travel requirements well in advance of their retreat.
Is there WiFi? Will my phone work in Mexico?
Check with your cell phone provider about cell service in Mexico. Many U.S. cell phones will work with no modifications, some will need to purchase an additional plan to use while you travel, and others will need to notify their cell provider about the travel in order for the phone to work outside the U.S.
I communicate through WhatsApp for all retreat communications while in Mexico so please contact your cell provider well in advance of getting to Mexico to ensure uninterrupted service and the ability to communicate when you arrive.
Do I need to get local currency?
I recommend avoiding the currency exchange at the airport. The rates are terrible compared to what you’ll get at the ATMs in Sayulita.
Check the exchange rate that your bank offers before you get to Mexico to ensure that you’re getting a good rate from the local ATM. You can choose to decline the local rate and use your bank’s rate if that is better. Most Mexican banks will have staff that speaks English if you need help.
