Wild Bodies Surf Camp - beginner-friendly surf camp for women in Mexico

Surfing changed my life

I’ve always wanted to learn to surf, but for years I carried the belief that I didn’t have the right body for it – that I wasn’t athletic enough, strong enough, or coordinated enough. Surfing felt like something that was for other people. But this retreat changed that story.

With each wave I paddled into, I discovered how capable I really am. The encouragement from everyone in the group and the surf instructors was so incredible, too. I found strength I didn’t know I had, not just physically but mentally. I let go of old limitations and replaced them with trust in my body, in the ocean, and in the process.

Surfing truly changed my life. I’m walking away from this experience with more confidence, more connection, and an eagerness to get back out there again.

Beginner surfing retreat for women in Mexico

I am athletic, I am strong

The retreat was SO FUN! It allowed me to try surfing, which I’ve been wanting to try for a long time in a safe and supportive container that made it feel less risky than booking a surf lesson on my own.

Growing up, my family held the belief “we are not athletic.” No one in my family is interested in sports or physical fitness in any way. From realizing that I love surfing, conversations with other retreat participants, and in our sharing circles, I was able to unlearn that old story and replace it with the belief that I am athletic, I am strong, I want to do athletic activities with my body, and all of that is okay.

Eased a lot of anxiety

The retreat had a great balance between group activities and down time. Plus, a built in community to explore.

Amber is really good at breaking down big and scary things to be digestible. It eased a lot of anxiety I had about trying something new.

I went from mildly afraid to more curious and excited.

About Your Host

Amber Beach

I’m Amber Beach (formerly Amber Karnes), a community builder, artist, and teacher living in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since 2015, I’ve been hosting adventure trips and yoga retreats for women who want to make peace with their bodies, have fun in nature, and make new friends.

I specialize in accessible adventures and most of my guests are people who feel left behind by the outdoor industry: folks in larger bodies, people with mobility limitations or disabilities, and older folks.

At my adventure retreats we have learned to surf, jumped off cliffs into Mexican cenotes and Virginia rivers, snorkeled with sea turtles, danced under the full moon, swam in the Atlantic Ocean watching a solar eclipse, learned how to make tortillas from Mayan villagers, and made original art inspired by our encounters with manatees, whale sharks, and stingrays.

Plus size yoga retreat Mexico

When I found yoga in my early 20s, it started a decades-long journey of learning how to live well in this unruly body of mine. You can read a short summary of my long journey with body acceptance here. Eventually I became a yoga teacher and in 2010 I created Body Positive Yoga, Over the next 15 years, helped bring fat-positive and accessible yoga into the mainstream US yoga world.

My work pivoted away from yoga after the pandemic and now I am a marketing coach for independent creatives and solo business owners. I help artists, yoga teachers, and other creators share their work and invite more people into their world.

I love exploring how creativity, play, and adventure play a role in healing our body image, and I can’t wait to watch it happen in real-time on our next Wild Bodies trip!

Amber Beach holding surfboard - Wild Bodies Surf Camp

I grew up in a surfing town but never saw anyone who looked like me in the waves. I tried surfing for the first time at age 42 in Sayulita. That trip was a special turning point in my life, and the inspiration for Wild Bodies Surf Camp.

2027 will be my 4th time leading this surf camp! What a wild ride and a dream for me. I can’t wait to invite you into this incredible experience and for you to be changed by Sayulita the way that I was.

You can connect with me by joining my email list or find me at @amberthebeach on Instagram.

🦋 Adventure Trips Built for Bigger Bodies

My retreats are inclusive adventures made for wild bodies!

I have led over a dozen wellness and adventure retreats over the years, and I design my retreats specifically with fat and plus-size travelers in mind.

This event is open to people of all shapes and sizes who want to learn surfing. But I center larger bodies in my work. I want fat folks to feel like absolute royalty at my events.

The tiniest details are important to me so you can have an excellent experience: seating that works for your body, equipment like surfboards being available in your size, and providing lots of information about accessibility and activities so you can self-select what works for you.

Plus size surfing retreat Mexico for beginners

check out this highlight reel from my 2025 Wild Bodies Art Retreat in Mexico!

When it comes to meeting accessibility needs, I’m not perfect, but I’m responsive as heck. I iterate every retreat based on feedback from my guests, and if there’s a problem that needs solving, I do my level best to solve it for you right away so that you can be comfortable.

For example, after feedback from a few guests, I’m providing golf carts to and from all planned activities, so you can save your energy for things like surfing instead of spending it walking in the heat.

At my retreats, I create a supportive environment where no one gets left behind, so you can safely push your limits in a group of other fun, positive folks without worrying about keeping up or fitting in.

We’re gonna celebrate each other when we feel awkward and when we win. And we’ll have so much fun learning and practicing together. My face always hurts from laughing and smiling so much at these events. 😂

Accessibility & Activity Levels

If you have questions or accessibility needs not covered here, please reach out ahead of booking. Caring for you and your body on this trip is my top priority and I’d love to make your participation in the retreat work for you. Book a call with me or email me to discuss.

I’m including information about activity levels and accessibility here so you can know if this retreat is appropriate for you and be prepared ahead of time with information.

Retreat Activity Level: 3/5

Activities: Surfing, ocean swimming, yoga, dance, walking (golf carts available)

Accessibility Information About The Hotel

Help is available getting your luggage to your room or whatever assistance you may need. The hotel staff is excellent and will be there to assist us all week. Please communicate any needs in the registration form, or talk to Amber when you arrive.

The hotel has 3 floors. There is no elevator in the hotel. Rooms are available on the ground floor, second floor (1 flight of stairs or approx. 16-18 stairs), or third floor (2 flights of stairs).

The dining terrace is on the third floor. The yoga studio is on the rooftop, up an additional half-flight of 8 stairs.

The pools and massage rooms are on the ground floor.

If you need more specific information about any of the rooms or the hotel, please let me know.

Physical Activities

Ocean swimming

Sayulita’s southside beach is the calmest (where we’ll be surfing), with waves depending on the wind, tides, and other constantly changing conditions. Sayulita is a very friendly beach with manageable waves and a sandy bottom. Waves get bigger as you go toward the north side of town.

Northside beach is only a 5-minute walk from our hotel, but there is a steep sandy descent into the water, and the waves can be quite crashy. Please don’t swim alone at northside beach if you decide to get into the water.

Surfing

Surfing is an extremely demanding sport that will wear you out fast, even though you’re having fun! It involves carrying a board out into the water (sandy bottom, small waves), getting on the board, floating and balancing on your belly, paddling, and riding the board in to the beach. Then you return and do it all again. The surf lessons will last about 90 minutes, and there will be time to take breaks between catching waves.

We share boards so you can take a few turns, then go to the beach for some water or a break, cheer folks on, and then take another turn on the surfboard.

Walking

Walking is the main form of transportation in Sayulita and you can certainly accumulate many steps getting around town. However, based on feedback from past attendees, I have decided to rent golf carts for the week. Everyone will have a ride (if they want it) to and from scheduled retreat activities. This way you can choose to save your energy for surfing or other activities rather than spend it on walking in the heat.

Golf carts are available to and from scheduled retreat activities. They are not private taxis or to be used for side quest adventures away from the group. If you decide you want your own private taxi, golf carts are available for rental.

You may choose to walk instead of ride, but be sure to factor in the extra time it takes to get to and from activities. Our hotel is on the north side, which is a 6-minute walk from the north side beach and about a 12-15 minute walk to the main part of town.

There are 5-6 restaurants or coffee shops within a 5-minute walk of the hotel. For a 12-15 minute walk, you reach the main area of town and have countless restaurants and convenience stores available. The advantage of staying on the north side is we are far away from the hustle & bustle of Sayulita’s nightlife noise, in a mostly residential area.

It’s important to make sure you stay hydrated, avoid the heat of the day, and wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. The streets are uneven terrain with concrete, dirt, gravel, with uneven curbs that may end suddenly. Please watch your step, as the most common injury in Sayulita is a twisted ankle from stepping off a famously-uneven Mexican sidewalk.

Yoga classes

The classes offered will be accessible, with variations will be offered for all mobility levels. Yoga props are provided, including mats, blocks, blankets, and straps. We can bring chairs from the dining area if we need them.

Dance party

Dance with us or pull up a chair, sit and enjoy the atmosphere, take breaks as often as you need to

Hotel Seating Options

Photos of chairs, bathrooms, staircases, and more are available upon request.

Seating in rooms: varies by room but includes wooden and leather chairs of various heights with and without arms.

Dining area: wooden and wicker chairs without arms

Pool area: pool loungers without arms, benches without arms

Gathering space outside yoga studio: couches

Food & Dietary Needs

Meals included:

  • Hotel breakfast buffet or to-go items from the buffet every morning
  • Group dinners on nights 1, 2, and 5

Meals not included:

  • Dinner on nights 3 and 4
  • Lunches and snacks

Catering group meals at the hotel is quite expensive, so I structured it this way to keep costs down. I also wanted to give you the chance to experience the amazing Mexican food and culture of Sayulita by eating in its many local restaurants.

There are small markets that carry basic grocery items and convenience stores like Oxxo where you can get snacks. There is no large supermarket or WalMart-type store in Sayulita.

At our hotel, coffee is served starting at 8am each morning, and breakfast is served buffet style 8:30-11:30am. The buffet typically includes fruit, yogurt, beans, soy dishes, eggs, protein options, sauteed mushrooms, chilaquiles, vegan eggs, pancakes, gluten-free and non- gluten-free granola, and fruit flavored water (agua fresca). Usually there is at least one dish with meat in it. The menu changes everyday and everything has a label with the dish description.

The food in Sayulita is fresh, affordable, and lovingly prepared. I personally have never had a bad meal in this town! I eat almost exclusively vegetarian when I stay in Sayulita and many restaurants have good vegan and gluten-free options.

I’ll be sending out a guidebook before our trip which has a list of many local restaurant options. You can eat from under $5 USD at a taco stand to a gourmet meal for $30+. There are options at every price point.

Important: Do not drink the tap water or use it to brush your teeth. Purified water is available in many dispensers around the hotel. Bottled water is available for purchase at just about any market in town. Ice served around town is purified.

Alcohol & Drug Policy

Alcohol Policy

Alcohol is not included in the retreat cost.

There will be alcohol available at many bars or restaurants in town. If you choose to drink, I ask that you please do so responsibly and respectfully.

I encourage us all to keep in mind that we are in another culture, being invited to stay on their land while we enjoy ourselves. Please keep the energy of being in community with one another at a yoga hotel (which is a different vibe from drinking on vacation at a beach resort).

Drug Policy

I ask that everyone refrain from consuming recreational drugs while attending this retreat.

Smoking

Smoking is only allowed in designated areas outside the hotel. Smoking is never allowed inside rooms. Electronic cigarettes or vapes are now illegal to bring into Mexico and carry heavy fines or jail time. Please take this seriously, as past participants have gotten stopped at customs and incurred large fines.

Accessing Medical Care

There is an in-town urgent care and traditional clinic that also offers wellness IVs. Amber got treatment for an ear infection here and it was a great experience. The staff spoke English.

Local pharmacies (farmacias) are everywhere and have very reasonable prices on common over-the-counter medications, plus many drugs you usually need a prescription for in the USA.

There are hospitals in Punta Mita (25 minutes) and Puerto Vallarta (45 minutes).

In the case of an accident, injury, illness, theft, or other incidents, you must immediately notify Amber and a hotel staff member. Emergency procedures are in place at the hotel to assist us. However, they cannot guarantee necessary medical attention or treatment.

Travel Insurance & Illness

You should promtply purchase the mandatory travel insurance so that you can get “cancel for any reason” insurance (many plans require you to purchase coverage within 1-2 weeks of your initial deposit). Travel insurance may cover your investment in the case you get sick before or during the retreat. Plans vary so you should talk to your insurance provider about the coverage you require.

You may also elect to purchase insurance plan that covers medical care or medical transport in Mexico. I recommend this, as travel insurance is quite affordable compared to what you are spending on this trip, or what emergency medical treatment could cost.

COVID & Illness Policy

Participation in any group activity carries a risk of getting sick, especially when people travel to the event. Getting sick at an event, or worse, passing an illness around an event is a huge bummer, but it does happen.

In our post-pandemic world (in which Covid is still very much alive and well) it’s important to have a plan, as all of us have different risk profiles and practices around staying well.

Obviously we want to avoid any illness, but I treat Covid differently because it is an extremely contagious virus, and also extremely common to pass around at events. I also have many guests with compromised immune systems, and with our remote location, accessing medical care will not be simple, so I want to do my best to keep our community safe.

Retreat Agreements

To care for the group and yourself, I’m asking everyone attending this retreat to agree to the following:

  • All retreat participants must test negative for Covid before they leave their home airport for the trip.
  • Please wear a mask in the airport and on the plane. It’s extremely common for someone to get sick while traveling to an event, then pass the illness around at the event. Please mask during your travels to protect your investment in this trip and the health of your fellow community members and hotel staff that you’ll be living with for the week (and their families).
  • If you feel ill at the retreat, please let Amber know right away. We can make sure you get meals in your room or whatever support you need.
  • If you feel ill, Amber will ask you to wear a mask and go to the clinic to test for Covid.
  • If you test positive for Covid during the retreat, you will need to isolate. This is a huge disappointment to happen at a retreat, when you’ve anticipated the event so much, so please wear a mask on the plane and in the airport for your best chance at arriving and staying healthy!
  • I ask that if you test negative for Covid but are still feeling ill, especially if you run a fever, that you isolate and rest until you feel well. If you need to be near the group for any reason, I will have masks available.

If you want to see the entire retreat agreement contract before you register, please email me.

Reviews from Wild Bodies Retreats

I attended every single retreat she offered one year

Amber Karnes is someone I’ve had the pleasure of learning yoga from, attending retreats and collaborating with as a wellness practitioner. One of the things that’s been a pleasure throughout all of my experiences is the thoughtfulness and impact of her work.

She is always there in her students minds or in the retreat participants hearts, creating an unforgettable and transformative experience that is centered around personal and collective empowerment. And working with her is FUN. She’s driven, creative and is a powerhouse of taking a project from idea to completion.

There’s a reason why I attended every single retreat she offered one year, trust.

Deb Malkin, Mindbody Coach, The Curiosity Cure

Georgia

Usually at the end of a trip, I dread going back home, or I’m desperate to go home. But today, I have this overwhelming feeling of peace and gratitude. I’m inspired to go back to the life that I get to have, and I’m feeling really motivated.

I was just expecting to have a really fun experience with other cool women, but this was more than I bargained for in a huge way. I get to go back with this whole different version of me; I’ve shed a couple layers and grown a couple of skins.

This retreat is the best gift you can give to yourself because it is truly an investment in your body and nervous system. I will carry so much of what I learned about myself into my real life. And if you already know yourself plenty—you’ll certainly gain some new friends!

Georgia

The art was hugely impactful and well considered. The dance party was amazing and so much more than I thought it might be!

Georgia

This retreat allowed me to make connections with people who view the world in a similar way that I do, but also allowed me to see the world through new eyes. Retreats like these create spaces where people are free to share their experiences in a non-judgmental space which is both enlightening and healing.

I loved the balance of activities and downtime, it was nice to feel like there was enough time to recharge between activities. I feel like I got more out of them this way. Everyone was so accommodating, it was lovely to feel so cared for.

Amber

I particularly enjoyed the group discussions on body image + collage making that followed. Having discussion + prompts and something to create immediately were invaluable to me and something I will carry with me IRL!

If you’re on the fence about attending, I would say that you need to do it. Life’s too short to sit on the fence for anything pertaining to your well being. It’s affordable, accommodations can be made, you’ll learn more about yourself and you’ll return a better human to trying it.

Before I got to surf camp I felt insecure, tired, clumsy and stressed, and now as I’m leaving, I feel free, competent, like a badass, and part of a community. I am more aware of my possibilities!

Before I got to surf camp I felt anxious, and now as I’m leaving, I feel calm. I caught several waves and learned that I can do hard, physical things and not “pay for it” the next day. Sayulita is a magical place, I felt very connected to this place!

I felt cared for, listened to and seen. Thank you for all your care and attention to the details. I appreciate the way you have such high standards.

Before I got to surf camp I felt nervous, and now as I’m leaving, I feel confident. It is the most supportive and kind group. Everyone is inclusive and positive.

Amber creates a container for people to feel safe enough to chase fantasies + dreams. These retreats bring out the best in you and challenge your perception of what is possible for you. I am leaving more grounded, rejuvenated, embodied, and wiped out (in a good way).

I’m leaving invigorated and rejuvenated. A favorite memory I am taking home is coming together in community with a group of strangers who I can now call friends. If someone was on the fence about attending, I would tell you to do it! Treat yourself to a playful adventure with beautiful souls in an incredible place.

Georgia

Amber, you are amazing at building community and inclusion. This trip exceeded my expectations! I had so much fun that I didn’t want to leave. I felt like I made friends and made meaningful connections.

I feel more confident after this retreat. Both in skin and spirit. I feel like I am allowed to enjoy life and need to do it more often. And really learned a lot about myself and honoring my energy levels. I felt included and a sense of belonging. I belong.

Cherie

Georgia

Not only is the focus of the retreat on diving deep into our bravest and most incredible selves, but also the gift of having a week of being cared for – emotionally, physically, by a community with shared experience – is transformative and restful in a way that is so rare.

Rachel

Georgia

The feeling of being in community and finding safety to explore the challenges of Wild Bodies has been life-changing, soul searching, and like coming up from the depths in a splash of fun and discovery to the surface of my life.

Scarlett

Thank you for putting these retreats together. You attract the most wonderful people. We get to meet each other and do fun stuff while you facilitate this experience for everyone.

This is my second retreat, and both of them have been amazing. Thank you for being you and for making this experience possible for all of us.

Marisa

I didn’t think my second retreat could be better than my first. I have grown so much using my experience from my first retreat to the this second one. I maintained friendships, made new ones, deepened my connection with myself, others, and with my practice.

It has taught me how to use what I feel on my mat and share it with the world. Most of all it has given me a place to calm my mind, feel confident, and be more authentic with myself. Loved every minute!

I’d recommend this retreat to a friend because it was such a nourishing experience – I felt my body and soul get stronger, I felt my intentions take a more meaningful shape, I felt refueled. Plus, all the lovely people there are so supportive and made me feel like I had found a new community.

Amber is very good at pulling people out of their shell. I learned so much, but I also felt so comfortable in her environment and she made modifications for my back problem. She’s very good at reaching people where they are and a joy to learn from.

I attended a Body Positive Yoga retreat with Amber and it was life-changing, life-affirming, actually!

Amber’s care, compassion, commitment, and drive is what still has me doing yoga and still working on me and my overall health (body, mind, and spirit). She gave me the tools I needed to move forward on my health and self love journey.

I was pretty skeptical about what to expect, despite having signed up on a last minute whim. I deal with social anxiety and struggle to step out of my comfort zone when it comes to meeting new people. This was a great opportunity to challenge my own insecurities and do so in a supportive environment with other women who face the same internal conflicts.

Being in a community of intelligent, authentic and like minded, yet diverse women is exceptionally empowering.

To know there are others out there that you can identify with, learn from, and share community with is so impactful and can be carried with you in everyday life wherever you go.

How powerful community can be. It was so wonderful being around women who were committed (even at different levels) to achieving body peace.

I love looking at our bodies together and witnessing the power that we hold to heal ourselves and each other.

I think what Amber does is so important in holding space for us to find one another and lead us through example, wisdom, kindness, and humor.

Community building is a special skill that, with Amber, comes from her heart and a passion for the ways we can see and be seen in the world with compassion.

My Body Positive Yoga class with Amber was the real but very needed compassionate check-in toward living in a body that’s different. She gifted me her focused attention, thoughtful words, and movement to love myself wholly.

You usually must buy this type of policy within two weeks of making your deposit for this trip, so do not delay. Read more about travel insurance in the FAQ.

Travel insurance is a minor cost to add protection to your significant investment in this trip. It will protect your investment in case the trip has to cancel for any reason, or if you are unable to attend for a variety of reasons.

Schedule Changes

International travel and group travel built with accessibility in mind require flexibility and a positive mental attitude. Activities, excursions, and itinerary may change at any time, depending on availability, weather, and what Amber  determines is most appropriate for the group’s wellbeing. Amber will adapt the itinerary to the group who registers, and designs the event around the people who need the most support, so everyone can be included.

About The Location

Can I read some reviews of the hotel?

If you’d like to read the excellent Google and Tripadvisor reviews for this venue, email me. I keep the hotel name private for security reasons. Once you register, I will send you complete details on the venue and location.

Tell me about the food!

Do I have to share a hotel room?

No, all rooms have queen or king beds and are sold as solo rooms. No sharing rooms with strangers! However, if you’d like to book with a friend, you can book a room with 2 beds. Let me know you’re booking together when you register!

I have questions about accessibility or activity levels.

Great! I have a whole section about that right here.

What is the alcohol and drug policy?

I have a question you didn't answer here.
No problem! Email me or book a time on my calendar and I’d love to answer your question.

About the Experience

Which week should I register for?

First-Timer’s Week is a slower build-up and designed to be a non-intimidating approach to surfing. We spend time in the water, then the next day we practice floating and dry-land skills before we ever try to catch a wave. We will have 2 surfing lessons with our surf coaches during First-Timer’s Week. View schedule

At Alumni Week, we get right into the waves, and have surf lessons every morning. View schedule

If you have never attended a Wild Bodies Surf Camp event, you are required to attend First-Timer’s Week (you’re gonna love it!).

If you have attended a previous Wild Bodies Surf Camp with Amber, you can attend either (or both) events! If you prefer a more relaxed pace or fewer surfing sessions, pick First-Timers Week. And if you want to level up your skills and get more time on the board, pick Alumni Week.

Is this retreat for women only?

This retreat is for women and other gender minorities. It is not a space for cisgender men.

Let me try my best to be clear. Women (and people of other gender identities who grew up socialized as women) share certain lived experiences in our patriarchal culture. We receive implicit and explicit messages about our bodies and “our place in things” that men don’t. At Wild Bodies retreats, we often discuss the ways that cultural conditioning about our bodies overlaps with our sense of self.

This retreat is a space for women as well as anyone who was raised or socialized as a woman. Trans women are welcome, as well as transmasc and non-binary folks who were socialized as women (regardless of how they currently identify). It is not a space for cisgender men.

If you have questions about whether you should attend, please contact me and we can discuss!

Will I really be able to surf?

Yes you will surf! As a beginner surfer myself, I’ve noticed that surfing is made up of 2 main things: catching waves and all the other stuff.

Catching waves looks like:

  • Riding the waves mermaid style on your belly
  • Cruising into shore riding the board on your knees or in a kneeling lunge position
  • Standing on the board for a second and falling off
  • Standing on the board for a few seconds at a time (then, falling off)
  • Falling off at any time for no reason when you thought you “did it right”
  • Getting tumbled around by the waves after you fall off, pretty much every time 😂
  • And so on – expect LOTS of cute wipeouts

But catching waves is just one small part of surfing. Surfing also looks like all this stuff:

  • Putting on your rash guard and sunscreen
  • Carrying your board to the beach
  • Warming up your body with some stretches and movements
  • Practicing your pop-up
  • Walking or paddling your board out to where we catch waves
  • Learning to paddle your board
  • Learning how to navigate waves while on your board
  • Learning to balance on your board on your belly
  • Learning to sit on your board
  • Learning to read waves and the timing of when to catch them
  • Learning where not to be when a wave comes in
  • Sitting on your board watching for waves and looking at your beautiful surroundings
  • Carrying your board back up the beach
  • Digging sand out of every crevice 😂

Surfing is a fun, challenging, complicated activity. You may be wondering, “Will I stand up on the surfboard and catch a wave?”

Many, many people do stand up during their first lesson. There’s no guarantees in life (especially in the ocean, with constantly changing conditions), but to manage your expectations:

I took my first surf lesson at age 42 in Sayulita. I stood up on the board 4 times during my very first surf lesson (for literally 1 second at a time). I would estimate that in my first week of surfing, with about 100 attempts to catch waves, I stood up only 6 times. Your mileage may vary.

But standing is not the only part of surfing. Everyone that attempts surfing will catch a wave. Some of us will go in on our bellies (it’s so fun this way, you look cute, feel like a mermaid, and your butt looks cute 😂), some of us will catch waves on our knees or a kneeling lunge position, some of us will stand up for a few waves.

I’m hiring a photographer to capture pictures of our surf lesson and we’ll snap photos of each other with the surfboards throughout the week.

If you want to take more surf lessons, connect with our instructors so you can arrange it while you’re in town.

I'm nervous about being able to keep up with the group during activities.

I design my retreats in such a way that we move at the pace of the people who need the most time and assistance.

No one is ever made to feel “too slow.”

As the person responsible for holding the container of the retreat group, I set the pace for activities and I intentionally lead “from the back of the pack” according to how the group is doing.

Even the most athletic people have bad days, get too hot in the sun, or get their period. So I am always evaluating the group in front of me and making sure that no one is left behind, whether we are doing yoga, walking to dinner, or on an excursion.

Our hotel is on the north side, which is a 5-minute walk from the north side beach and about a 12-15 minute walk to the main part of town.

If you still have questions about whether this particular retreat is appropriate for you, email me or book a time on my calendar. I’d love to chat with you and make sure I answer all your concerns.

Am I too old to come to the retreat?

You’d be amazed at how many people have this question! The other question is, “Will I be the oldest one there?”

Most of my retreat guests are in their early 30s to early 60s, and I deeply appreciate inter-generational retreats. It adds layers of perspective and wisdom that benefit the collective.

I would love to have folks beyond the age range of 30-60. You are not too old!

As one younger retreat participant said of some of my older guests, “I was able to see the wisdom that aging can bring. It was incredibly beautiful to see people, older than I am, loving and caring for their bodies the way that is mindful and intentional. It helped open my eyes to the fact that life, at any age, is what you make of it.”

Will I be able to do the yoga classes?

Yes! Classes offered will be adaptive, inclusive yoga practices appropriate for all bodies and ability levels.

The yoga that I practice is not designed to be a strenuous workout. These are easy movements and big deep breaths that meet your body where you are today. Lots of options and variations will be offered for any practice I lead.

Do most retreat participants come alone?

Yes, most of my guests do come alone. But by the end of their stay they usually have made some great new friends. I’ve heard from folks who retreated with me a decade ago that are still friends with each other today!

You are also welcome to book with a friend and share a room if you desire. The hotel has several double rooms and small suites that would be great for 2 or 3 friends booking together.

How big is the group?

For 2027 I am limiting each group to 9 participants (8 guests + 1 assistant).

What is your COVID or illness policy?

Travel Insurance & Illness

You should promptly purchase the mandatory travel insurance so that you can get “cancel for any reason” insurance (many plans require you to purchase coverage within 1-2 weeks of your initial deposit). Travel insurance may cover your investment in the case you get sick before or during the retreat. Plans vary so you should talk to your insurance provider about the coverage you require.

You may also elect to purchase an insurance plan that covers medical care or medical transport in Mexico. I recommend this, as travel insurance is quite affordable compared to what you are spending on this trip, or what emergency medical treatment could cost.

What do I need to bring?

I’ll send you a complete packing list before the retreat, but you don’t need any complicated or fancy items. Everywhere we go will be extremely casual.

I’ll be bringing comfortable, casual clothing, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sun shirt), a couple bathing suits, rashguard (I’ll send you one before the trip!), cover-ups for the beach and pool, loungewear, comfortable walking shoes, water shoes, yoga clothing, and stuff like sunscreen and bug repellant.

You may want things like a personal fan or special snacks, but we’ll get into those details closer to the retreat.

Provided by the hotel:

  • Pool towels (onsite use)
  • Yoga mats
  • Shampoo & conditioner
  • Hair dryers in each room
  • Clean drinking water
  • Wi-Fi throughout the property
  • First Aid kit
I already know how to surf, can I still come?

Sure, please come to the retreat! If you vibe with what I’m offering here, you are welcome. As long as your mindset is friendly toward beginners and encouraging toward new surfers, you are welcome at this retreat! Alumni Week is only open to past participants of Wild Bodies Surf Camp, regardless of your surfing experience.

I have a question you didn't answer here.
No problem! Email me or book a time on my calendar and I’d love to answer your question.

International Travel

I have travel insurance questions.

Travel insurance is mandatory for this event. I highly advise purchasing a travel insurance plan that includes “cancel for any reason” coverage. You usually must buy this type of policy within 1-2 weeks of making your deposit for this trip, so do not delay.

While the coverage provided by travel insurance varies based on the policy you purchase, as a general rule, this type of insurance may provide coverage for a variety of losses which you may incur relating to a booking, including losses relating to trip cancellation, illness, injury, theft, lost or damaged property, etc.

Be aware that, except for the limited refund rights in the cancellation policy, you are 100% responsible for any losses, penalties, fees, or other financial consequences arising out of any booking or trip, or the cancellation or interruption of any booking or trip (including, by way of example, costs related to airline tickets and fees, passport fees, visa fees, medical expenses, etc.).

Your credit card may have insurance that covers your purchase, so check with them first. This type of coverage satisfies my mandatory travel insurance requirement, but you may want additional coverage.

For most providers, getting a quote through their website is easy, or you can call and talk to someone about what you want in a plan. Look at the terms closely for each plan and make sure you are comfortable with the reasons you are allowed to use the insurance.

Check out this guide to travel insurance by WHOA Travel (a cool, women-owned travel company I work with), it does a good job of outlining the different things to look for in a plan. They also have links to some plans that have cancel for any reason insurance.

You can also go to reddit and do some searching about travel insurance plans and “cancel for any reason” insurance, and see what the masses recommend (that’s what I do to research these type of things). Getting quotes from different travel insurance company websites is a simple process and quotes are free. If you need help picking a plan, email me.

What airport should I fly into?

Please fly into the Puerto Vallarta International Airport | Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), Puerto Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico.

Transfers to the hotel will be arranged from this airport only.

When should I book my flight?

My surf camps tend to sell out, so you can buy your flight anytime. If you want confirmation that the event is 100% happening before your flight, just email me.

However, there is always a chance that an event can cancel or have to be rescheduled. Please never book a non-refundable flight for my events. It’s always best to book a refundable or changeable fare. Your travel insurance may cover change fees in the case that an event cancels or doesn’t get enough registrations to make, speak with your insurance provider about what is covered.

What time should I arrive and depart?

In order to take advantage of transfers to our hotel, please note: arrival transfers will only be offered for flights arriving between 11am and 3pm on arrival day and flights departing between 10am and 4pm on the departure date.

On departure day, plan on leaving the hotel 3 hours before your flight is scheduled to depart (ex: 7am for a 10am flight).

I recommend booking:

  • Flights arriving before 3pm on arrival day
  • Flights departing after 12pm on departure day

If you arrive or depart outside the stated hours above, you will be responsible for your own transportation, which is expensive. A private taxi from the airport to our venue is $80+ USD one way.

I'm nervous about traveling internationally.

I get it! Traveling internationally (especially solo) can be intimidating when you don’t know what to expect. Here’s some more information about how the experience will go.

Know that as the person responsible for the container of this retreat, I designed this experience with your safety in mind. I don’t want you to be confused about any step of the process, so please ask me if you have questions. I want your retreat experience to be smooth and stress-free.

I have a WhatsApp group that activates about a month before the retreat. We use this to meet one another, stay in touch about questions and updates, and especially for arrival and departure day. I also send updates throughout the week like a daily schedule with packing lists of what to bring to each activity.

I’ll email you ahead of the retreat with general info about international travel. Please check your passport expiration date now! Generally, your passport cannot expire within 6 months of your trip date.

Nervous about speaking Spanish? Most airport employees and retreat center staff speak English. I speak intermediate(ish)-level Spanish and frequently travel solo, I usually can translate or help communicate, if needs arise. And usually there are a few participants who speak Spanish as well!

Here’s a little more about what to expect:

You’ll fly into Puerto Vallarta airport, get your bags and go through customs.

As soon as you have your bag, you’ll message me on WhatsApp and I’ll alert the driver. Our driver will be in a pre-arranged location with a sign and you’ll get on the shuttle with your bags. If you’re a little early for the shuttle, you’ll meet a few other retreat participants at the bar outside the airport. You’ll probably be on the shuttle with 2-3 other participants.

You’ll ride 45 minutes to Sayulita and meet me at the hotel. Your driver can stop at an ATM and a local supermarket so you can purchase some favorite snacks or any supplies you forgot. When you arrive, we’ll get you checked in to your room. We’ll meet that evening for a group dinner at a nearby restaurant.

I’ll brief everyone on what they need to know to stay safe while we are in town. Sayulita is a small, tourist-friendly town with plenty of international travelers. If you use basic precautions, your trip should be without incident!

You can check the schedules on this page for complete details of what we’re doing at the retreat.

On our departure day, you’ll leave in a private shuttle with 2-3 other retreat participants and ride back to the airport. Follow the signage and go through security as with any airport. Most airport staff speak English. When you land at home, you’ll go through customs again.

Let me know if you have any specific concerns or questions about the process of international travel, and we can talk more!

Is it safe to travel to Mexico?

Yes, Mexico is generally safe for travelers who take basic precautions, the same type of precautions one would take in any large city around the world.

Mexico is a popular tourist destination with millions of visitors each year who enjoy its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and vibrant cities safely. Like any place, there are areas with higher crime rates, but Sayulita is a small town with very little crime. It’s always important to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuables, and take extra precaution if walking alone at night.

That being said, I have ridden many public buses in this part of Mexico and walked alone at night many times in Sayulita and never felt unsafe. I honestly feel much safer in Sayulita than I have in many cities in the U.S.

I’m arranging trusted transportation services from the airport and we’ll have a group orientation about safety when you arrive, but if you follow common-sense guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy a safe and memorable trip to Mexico.

How will I access medical care in Mexico if I need it?

There is an in-town urgent care and traditional clinic that also offers wellness IVs. I got treatment for an ear infection here and it was a great experience.

I recommend that your mandatory travel insurance policy covers medical care and transport in Mexico should you need it. Read more about travel insurance in the FAQ.

What is the weather like in Mexico?

Situated on the Pacific coast of Mexico, Sayulita experiences warm and tropical weather throughout the year.

The month of May is warmer with temperatures ranging from 73°F (23°C) to 91°F (33°C). You can expect plenty of sunshine and lower humidity than later in the month, which is the start of rainy season.

However, it can feel quite warm, especially if you are not accustomed to the humidity. It’s important to stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun, and avoid too much activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Do I need to speak Spanish to go to this retreat?

Not really! Many of the people working in hospitality in Mexico speak English, but in any case, be creative! Smiles, gestures, por favor, gracias, and Google Translate can get you far.

Most airport employees and retreat center staff speak English. I speak intermediate(ish)-level Spanish and frequently travel solo, I usually can translate or help communicate, if needs arise. And usually there are a few participants who speak Spanish as well!

I recommend learning a little bit of Spanish for travelers, it will make you more confident and make life easier for you if you end up spending time outside. the group. Plus, your world opens up when you interact with locals in their own language. Learning a little Spanish shows respect to the people whose home we are enjoying.

On a personal note: After my trip to Sayulita in April 2024, I started learning and practicing Spanish using a combination of podcasts, online classes and videos, watching Netflix and listening to music, and travel. It’s been a goal of mine for years, but starting my solo travel era made me take it seriously. It feels proper and respectful that I should learn Spanish if I am going to organize trips in places like Mexico.

I’m honestly amazed at how much spoken and written Spanish I understand now, after just about a year of practice, and I am getting better at communicating too. It’s opened up my world and is extremely rewarding. I’m having a lot of fun learning, pero necesito practicar mucho mas.

Do I need a passport or visa?

U.S. citizens will need a passport to visit Mexico, but no visa is required at this time for stays under 180 days. Passports will require at least one blank page for an entry stamp. You should check that your passport’s expiration date is not expiring within 6 months of your trip.

If you need a passport or to update your passport, I urge you to act immediately, especially if you are in the US. Wait times may be long.

Citizens of all other countries should check travel requirements well in advance of their retreat.

Is there WiFi? Will my phone work in Mexico?

Yes, the hotel has WiFi throughout, as do many cafes and restaurants in Sayulita. My review of the internet in Sayulita: it is not the high-speed connection you may be used to, but I was able to do Zoom calls at the hotels and other basic internet browsing.

Check with your cell phone provider about cell service in Mexico. Many U.S. cell phones will work with no modifications, some will need to purchase an additional plan to use while you travel, and others will need to notify their cell provider about the travel in order for the phone to work outside the U.S.

I communicate through WhatsApp for all retreat communications while in Mexico so please contact your cell provider well in advance of getting to Mexico to ensure uninterrupted service and the ability to communicate when you arrive.

Do I need to get local currency?

Yes, you will need to have some cash on hand for lunches, snacks, gratuities, 2 dinners out, and other incidentals. Many businesses in Sayulita take credit cards, CashApp, or Venmo, but some are cash only.

I recommend avoiding the currency exchange at the airport. The rates are terrible compared to what you’ll get at the ATMs outside the airport.

Ask your driver to stop an an ATM on the way into town. Sometimes the ATMs in Sayulita are unreliable, although there are many available and I’ve always been able to find a working one in the many months I stayed in Sayulita.

Check the exchange rate that your bank offers before you get to Mexico to ensure that you’re getting a good rate from the local ATM. You can choose to decline the local rate and use your bank’s rate if that is better. Most Mexican banks will have staff that speaks English if you need help.
